Explain performance benefits of 64 bit dual core

I'm looking at either CentOS or FreeBSD for an OS on a dedicated server and would like to know what the benefit would be to go from a single core CPU like a P4 2.8GHz to a dual core P42.8GHz. Also what benefit am I going to see from 64 bit processing.

With the Intel architecture, you can't expect double the performance for the dual core, but you should see at least 70% boost. The memory architecture isn't as good in the current Intel dual core CPU as the Opteron has.

As to 64 bit, if your application does a lot moving of data or long long math, you should see a measurable boost in performance. If you have lots code, you will likely see a small performance decrease, due to the instruction fetches taking more space in the caches.

We saw this at MIPS 13 years ago when running IRIX 32 bit vs. 64 bit.
