Newbie Designer

Hi:

Hope someone in here can point me in the right direction!

I've been designing websites for years, so I have a good handle on html etc. but I'm really lost when it comes to adding certain elements to a website.

I'm desiging a site which requires membership in order to cast a vote. I would need to do the following:

1. Collect data from visitor (name, email address and a personally created ID number)

2. Somehow have all that data stored somewhere so that when someone logs in to vote, they can put in their ID number and vote.

3. If someone inputs a valid ID, an error message is displayed and they cannot vote

That's what I want to do but I don't know what I need to do to make it happen. What I also need is for all this to happen automatically and instantly, without me having to add any data manually. In other words, I want someone to be able to fill out their membership info and then go to vote right away, without any input from me.

I'm hosted with Host Monster, in case that makes any difference.

Can someone assist me? Please use laymans terms if possible!!!

Thanks!

Deb

That's pretty much PHP right there.

Quite a bit of CMS's (Content Management Systems) have polls and the like built in and are quite easy to edit. Php-nuke, etc.

Thanks for your reply.

I should have explained - this isn't a poll type of vote. It would be a typed-in vote (they can type in their favorite ice-cream flavor for example).

Any other suggestions?

PHP with a MySQL backend.

Look for tutorials on PHP + MySQL tutorials on google. Or, search google for a PHP script that already does what you want.

You have a few options:
1) Find online a few easy-to-customize-with-little-knowledge programs for all popular items you may need, such as: polls, guestbooks, etc. (check hotscripts.com, for example);
2) Find a partner programmer, who could do the job for you;
3) Learn a good combination for a few programming languages that would allow you to do the jobs.

The best option is #3 of course...
