A picture is worth more than a thousand words

The problems/benefits of overselling can be easily understood from this photo.

For the customer: overselling = A pain in the a**

For the hosting provider: overselling = I dont have to work my a** off.

LOL nice one and great analogy but hey as long as there are people who want 20GB diskspace and 500GB bw for 2 bucks there will be oversellers.

Actually, I think it's often the other way around. Overselling to the point of overloading leads to headackes and hard work to keep the server online.

lmao, someone should make a vector and use it on an anti-overselling page on their hosting site

I see profits there.

At the end of the day it makes sense, how many people purchase alot of space but never use it? It would be madness just to have it all lying around and not being used. Of course it's a little different when you try and use what you have paid for and it's not available. But it's like everything in life, they sell you a dream, everything is cheaply made hence the lower price you demanded.

More correctly that's overselling gone wrong. If they'd sold too much space thinking that it wouldn't all be used then that would happen. Done correctly a cheaper service can be given to the consumer, generally without effecting it.

Many industries oversell. Just it seems most people don't think hosting should.

to hire an expert to write 1000 words costs about £200-1000 (depending on how expert they are.

Painting go for millions.

Therefore a picture is always worth more than 1000 words
