Need advice on Laptop

Hey all

At the moment I have several newish desktops, but my current laptop is several years old.

I am looking for a very portable laptop with decent spec, nothing amazing - just bog standard stuff really.

Anyone got any suggestions, my price range is moderate, nothing crazily high, but I am prepared to spend a bit

I just got a new one with the following:

AMD Turion 64 Processor
1 GB RAM
100 GB Drive
15.4 widescreen display
Dual Layer burner
Integrated wireless (which I am loving....no more cords!)

It is of medium size, the proportions are more of a concern than the actual weight (6.x pounds if I remember correctly). The 15.4 widescreen makes it a little larger to carry (I was used to a 14 before so it may be the comparison between the two that makes it stand out to me).

Got it for $799, no hassle with any rebates (hate rebates) from BestBuy. Normally dislike BB, but since they switched over to instant rebates, makes them somewhat more tolerable. Current price in this weeks ad for the same system is $849 (after instant rebates).

I am very happy with it so far, it is quite speedy, has a wonderful screen and keyboard layout. Only con I have is that the optical drive is on the left instead of the right. I am used to it on the right side and I have not trained myself to go to the left first yet with the new one.

I got a nice dell inspiron for $1600 with intel dual core, 1gb ram, 80gb HDD, high quality screen, the works. It's a great computer.

BestBuy is great for cheap laptops for basic use. Good service plans as well if you need it.

I'd recommend the Apple MacBooks. They can be had for between $1,100 and $1,400, depending on the trim and color.

Just an observation, the OP's location is in "UK". BestBuy isn't there, are they?

I've been thinking about an MacBook as well. To be honest I don't know squat about them, and have only used Macs back in school, which is over a decade ago.

If I do get a MacBook I'll make sure to get the Intel version. That way I can natively boot Windows if I have to.

I have a Dell Inspiron 600, which is almost 2 years old. It's pretty good. It has a Pentium-M processor, and would probably give good battery life if I actually had to rely on its portability. I mostly use it in the kitchen on AC with the battery removed.
If you don't think anti-virus is enough and want the operating system to insulate you from spyware and viruses, you can repartition and install linux for websurfing. I have a hardware controller PCMCIA modem that is very linux compatible, but some of the newer distros can work with the internal Winmodem. I just upgraded to MEPIS 6 Beta3, and it can work with the Winmodem.
I guess Mac owners have their reasons for liking their Macs--eye of the beholder or something like that.

MacBooks are brand new and exclusively Intel-based. Perhaps you are thinking of iBooks or PowerBooks, which come only with the PowerPC-based architectures.

Well I meant the Intel CPU based versions that can boot Windows. That way I can still play all my favourite Windows games.

Personally I would recommend an IBM thinkpad from Lenovo.com. Excellent support from IBM and can go for hours on the battery with the various options they have.
