Question

New to this -- need advice on hosting plan in US

Hello webmasters:

I'm new on this site. Looks informative, though too much info to digest I'd appreciate if you could share your personal experiences about hosting providers in the US.

I'm updating web site for a small real estate business in Washington State. Their front page could get up to 100 hits per day. I used IX Web Hosting before but I'm not satisfied with the MySQL on their servers -- it's not fast enough.

I need to find a web hosting provider according to the following:

(1) Reliable, fast server response (esp. database engine);
(2) Trustworthy -- some personal info from customers will be temporarily stored on the server before it's retrieved by site Admins. In particular, tenancy application with names, addresses, SSN;
(3) Located in US only (demand from the owner);
(4) Support for PHP + MySQL;
(5) Support for multiple domains (which we own already)

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to WHT

So you are getting around 100 hits a day, so you probably aren't looking at a really huge hosting account. Have you tried doing a host quote by clicking "Find a host" at the top of the page or looking in the offer forums.

I've personally used CartikaHosting.com and I must say they are superb. They are a bit pricey compared to some, but without a doubt they are worth it. It's owner, Andrew, was always willing to chat with me when I had a question; As this was the first time I had used h-sphere. Their servers are quite fast and are most likely undersold. *I'm still with them.

To #3) Well, the servers are in the US but the HQ is in Canada. If I may ask, why the US. With networks being what they are today, it could be absolutely anywhere in North America and with a good carrier you wouldn't notice the difference on a regular webpage.

Thank you. No, I haven't tried it. I am really tired of all the automated searches and ratings -- they all are returning different results -- I guess depending on who pays them more.

I'm interested in people's personal accounts.

As I said, the owner of the company expressly pointed it out. I don't know, he might be paranoid about the web, hackers, etc. (He is an older guy.) In any case, I'll have to comply, although Canada could work too. Have to ask him.

Just to clarify - we are headquartered in Toronto, Canada. However, all of the network/server infrastructure is in the United States in Dallas, TX at Colo4Dallas in our own colocation racks. As far as privacy issues, etc. Canadian law and US law are similar with regards to personal information and storage of said information.

Hope this helps....
