Considering it was written >300 years ago, it is safe to say the music itself is public domain, meaning you can create and profit from a performance of the music without having to pay Pachelbel any royalties.

But individual performances are still protected. So no, you cannot download a performance of it, unless the holder of the performance rights grants you permission to do so

well i was pretty sure it was written before elvis and the beatles had their stint, but was wondering if i could get something on mp3 player. public domain was probably the wrong thing to ask!

There are probably plenty of free downloadable MIDI files. Free .mp3 files could be harder to find, because orchestras usually want to be paid for their work.

understood, and agreed, which is why i asked if anyone knew where i could find some mp3s, as opposed to midis

ive got some great stuff already on cds, and thought i had pacabel's canon, but was mistaken...

ill buy something this week but was hoping to find something in the short term
