Oversell with 1&1

http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/Hos...op&__lf=Static

Enjoy!

* 3 domain names
* 100 GB web space
* 2000 e-mail accounts
* 1000 GB traffic
$9.99 a month

I haven't checked the t&c but that's overoveroverselling.

How is this spam?

I am simply posting to tell everyone this is proberly the most "space" and "bandwidth" I've ever seen for $9.99. Just shows how far even the larger hosts are pushing it for more sales. Pure marketing.

I'm not sure how a (well crafted) T&C page could change the fact that overselling is being employed...

I think 1&1 are not on... we've lost alot of clients because of them having very appealing to the eye deals, but deep down they're a very poorly managed company.

I mean you'd be lucky to get a server for $99 with a 100Gb harddrive, never mind a shared package for $9.99... overselling is Ok in my opinion if it is very closely moderated... but that is just crazy.

Probably are overselling, but they are a large company and might not need to that much. As long as it is properly managed, there is nothing wrong with overselling

To a certain extend, yeah, but this is excessive. If anyone uses just 20% of what's advertised, they already lose money on it.

With the amounts they consume they can keep their costs very low. If it were 2% they wouldn't be running the special, but they are just hoping that most of their customers will stay below the mark where it loses them money.

If anyone is potentially interested in this deal I'd be very careful with signing up if you are actually planning to use a good amount of the space and bandwidth - you don't want to go with a company that loses money on you.

You don't want to go with a company that offers you gigantic space in the hopes of you not using it either.

I just saw a banner ad here for surfspeedy.com offering 200GB space & 1500 transfer for $8.95 a month. I guess dreamhost isn't all that bad compared to 1and1 & surfspeedy.com. How people would expect to get 200GB for 10$ is beyond me.

Just a comment regarding 1&1. Whether they are overselling or not, I have had bad experiences with their support. It is almost non-existent and on more than one occassion I have had to go through multi day email exchanges with their staff just to get an answer that they couldn't do something. Why is it that I have to explain to them what a vhost config is or what a wildcard is? Aren't they the hosting provider and the server experts? It's not like I wanted an immediate response from them, it was email support afterall. They could have researched it themselves before responding to me.

I was very disappointed in their support and while I rarely went to their control panel, I really did not like it.

To be honest, if you have a small site and it's not making money then it's fine. I still have a couple of sites with them but those will move when the contract is up early next year.

I think some people get sucked in by the perceived "value". They will never use all that space but they like knowing they got a deal (on paper at least).

I use this website for all of my domains. It only cost $5.99 per domain and this month you can get a free .info domain name.
