UK Managed / Dedicated Hosting
Does anyone know of a reliable comparative review of hosting companies in the UK?
I'm primarily after companies that have a DC that doesn't go offline every other week, can offer from a single server to more complex solutions and who employ techs who know the difference between a server and a food mixer :-(

Hey there,
I'm from the UK and have been researching companies here recently.
I eventually went for a server in the US (because I am moving out to NUC in Aug to Columbia) BUT otherwise i would have gone for rackspace.
Most expensive, but very good.
Consider using a US company if you cannot find the value for money you want over here. You will probably find you get less data transfer in the UK, and that things are slightly more expensive. This all depends on your budget though!

Wonder when the UK wil wake up and smell the coffee..... Bandwidth needs to be cheaper so we can compete with the US.
Unless the UK companies are just ripping us all of, and it really is cheap in bulk....

I've not used Rackspace personally but I know people who do use them.
They have a UK website too: http://www.rackspace.co.uk/.

Take a look over at http://forum2.co.uk - it is a much more UK orientated site, though with a smaller audience.

I am not looking to host anything specific at the moment. Over time I dealt with servers hosted with a number of providers and was primarily trying to figure out who is doing what, how they compare, and so forth. Also are there companies providing 24x7 support for servers physically hosted at whoever's? [[Always with reference to the UK]]
One comes across a lot of 'these guys rock' and 'that host sucks' opinions or personal experiences but reliable comparative reviews seem to be taboo (or simply nobody ever bothered)....e.g.
- nature of DCs
- network infrastructure
- hardware platforms offered
- operating systems deployed
- scope and level of support
- pricing
- ....etc

Or rather, council taxes, regulations and utility bills just make running a DC stupidly expensive :-) <---- haven't really done any research yet....just a feeling I am getting.

Also don't forget all bandwidth is not the same, like all things in life if its quality your after you'll have to pay.

Bandwidth is not the only factor - Wages are higher here, space costs more here, power costs more here .. blah blah etc etc. You can't really compare.

What kind of price were you looking to spend, that generally decides the range of providers you have at your disposal

That's exactly my point!! :-) I am not trying to spend anything at the moment. I am just trying to figure out who the players are, what their position in the market is, etc!! I earn a living supporting servers and have dealt with some of the big players but I (sadly) never bothered to compile a who's who in hosting here in the UK.

Rackspace is much better in managed dedicated server hosting in UK. Only problem with UK Dedicated Servers is allowed monthly bandwidth.
Rackspace.co.uk should get first preference in hosting corporate websites in UK.
