switch (cidr help)

Say you have a managed cisco switch that is intially assigned a /28.

Then three months down the line you need extra IPs, then they give you another /28. However its on a different class C.

Can the switch listen for multiple blocks of IPs (with different subnets etc...).

Sure, you can run mutiple IP domain space on the same switch. Just have your provider add the second subdomain as a secondary on the port and then it will route them all down to your switch and the switch can handle it.

Hope that helps!

So in summary if I have been assigned a /28 intially with a subnet of 255.255.255.240 then I'll have no problem upgrading (i.e. adding) IPs in a few months time without losing the original IPs. I won't own the IP space so I presume other in myip.myip.myip.XXX space will be given to other users, but that won't affect future routing of new IPs will it?

Switch is Cisco 2924 XL EN.

Hey Matt,

You are really not doing any routing, so just have your provider send down the new subnet and your switch will easily handle the new domain space. This will work as long as the provider sends down both subnets.

Hope that helps!

yea

yea like i said youll need a layer 3 switch to do any type of routing now if your provider wants to handle your routing for you they should be able to do such at their core router. But your hooking directly up with a tier 1 provider most will not do this for you, if your hooking up with one of the colo providers on here they should be able to handle it for you.
