Shared or VPS?

I'm running a social network site averaging 60 members + 50 guest online at once. Currently I'm on a shared hosting with 100GB of bandwidth. As of now I've used over 70% of the available bandwidth. I figured I have to change plan or find a new host.

Should I find another shared hosting plan with more bandwidth or go for a VPS. What are the disadvantages of being on a shared hosting? When I compared a shared package with a VPS, both of them offer the same amount of space and bandwidth but obviously the VPS cost 3+ times more than average shared account.

On a shared hosting, most host doesn't tell me what kind of server/ spec I'm getting or the amount of ram I can use. Help?

Virtual private servers are a means of splitting a single physical server into multiple virtual servers. Virtual private servers are sometimes called virtual dedicated servers.

Some of the advantages of VPS:

Install your own applications
- Administrative Control (Root-like)
- Independent Secure Environment
- Dedicated Web Server
- Dedicated Mail Server
- Dedicated Database Server
- Dedicated FTP Server
- Dedicated Server Resources.

Of course, I've figured/read what a VSP is. I don't really need any of the advantages of VPS, so it should be okay just to get on another shared hosting plan with more bandwidth for my site?

Your CPU Usage would be the deciding factor. If you have a low CPU usage then you should be fine going to another overselling shared host site. However if your CPU usage is very high you should probably get a VPS.

If your host allow, why not just upgrade your current plan?

Cool

Yes, if shared is working for you and you like your host go for an upgrade with more BW or with another host who has more bandwidth (and expect to pay a reasonable fee for that amount of transfer)
CPU use would be the deciding factor on a VPS advantage. It sounds like you don't need the administrative features but depending on your applications you might hit a host's CPU usage limits. On VPS you usually are guaranteed a certain amount of CPU and are allowed more when it's available (other clients on the same VPS box are not using all their resources)

VPSs in theory, aren't oversold. This means you are paying for 100% of what you are oferred, whether you use it or not. Hence the higher price.

cyang, based on what you have posted, I am shocked your current host has allowed you to stay on their servers. If you can, upgrade your account and stay with them. No guarantee this will last for you. May I ask what you are paying for that package? is this a data base driven site?

This forum is full of people being suspended for using alot less resources then you apparently are. If this package is running you $10-$30 - be thrilled you are being permitted to stay on the server, however, do not expect this to last and begin looking at things like VPS or Dedicated.

Congratulations on the successful site and hopefully this helps....

Currently, I'm with hostgator. I've started with a baby plan and I've upgraded to a swamp(14.95 a month). Hostgator doesn't have any shared plan with more than 100GB of transfer. I've a choice of going to a semi dedicated with them but currently it is out of my budget($74.95). I'm hoping to spend around 50 a month with a new host. And yes, i'm running a database driven site.

I would recommend Jaguar PC, as their Freedom Plan seems to match your needs and your budget.

I think you should switch to a VPS plan, i think your current stats are on the edge of what shared plan can honestly offers, it's likely that sooner as your site grows there would be no choice to do that.

My recommendations for VPS hosts:

PowerVPS.com
SolarVPS.com

A review a few months from now would hold a lot more value.
