Very Fully-Managed Dedicated Server

The term "fully-managed" is getting murky. There's really "more managed" and "less manged".

Can you list some companies that offer *very* managed dedicated linux servers? Not just reactive on-call stuff, but preventative and pro-active. Like, practically hiring a sysadmin of our own. Someone who's accountable. I realize that's going to be expensive, but that's ok, it's what we want.

I know of pair.com, although they're BSD not linux. Anyone name some very managed dedicated linux server hosts?

Rotwang - You may want to search WHT and you shall see plenty of postings similar to your query here. Not many companies do pro-active monitoring but do own the responsibility to fix issues as and when it happens. Thx!

HTTPme.com has fully managed servers. If you want good quality fully managed servers you are looking around the $350/ mo range to start.

How about semi-mamaged and fully-mamaged.

In my opinion fully-managed means just that - you should only ever need to drop your content on the server.

Semi-managed and Fully managed are two different solutions. Also, some companies offer your root access while others dont. You should check out the offers section to find what you are looking for.

Fully managed should be 'general housekeeping' + requested tasks by user, but means you shouldn't have to do near any back end administration of the server. The provider should keep the server fully operational and manage all administration.

Yes, we are *still* updating our dedicated server page - but we do give quotes. One of these days I will sit down with our web guy and get that page completed. Truthfully, we've been so busy setting up new customers from the promotions that we run here, that I don't see the need to actually get the server page updated.

Managed just signifies that some management is included, it doesn't say what.

There seem to be two different types of management developing, the reactive 'managed servers' being sold by pretty much everyone; and then the truely pro-active services being sold by managed solutions providers who know exactly what they're managing. Hence today's massive difference in pricing.

We've found that offering "shelf" management services is a completely pointless route to go down, because everyones needs are different. For example some people host forums, others run complex hosting clusters for their clients - the level of management there is obviously going to vary greatly. We tend to talk to the client, see what they need managing, and then come up with a management contract/quote to suit their needs.

The majority of providers I've seen offering 'managed servers' don't seem to know what they'll be managing for the price the customer is paying, or even if they will know how to manage it, until the customer e-mails support with their first issue. This to me seems totally insane...

Unfortunately the managed hosting market is going downhill (just like the hosting market did many years ago) because of the people who offer rock bottom priced services, when they know they can't sustain the level of management they should be. Probably because they don't have the time, or the ability.

To the OP - how much do you have to spend?

Dan

Sorry to have to say this but I can tell you a need. After seeing all the strange things on your website, I came here to WHT to try to find out if you were even legit. With all the "Axis of Evil" talk in the news, calling it AxisHost also contributed to making me wonder if it was legit. I realize that "Axis" was probably just what you could think of to keep the same initials as AffordableHost and you seem atached to those . I've heard many good things about you in alt.www.webmaster and other places over the years and good things about AffordableHost until it changed hands.

There are some other blanks and errors in that template. For instance, your contact page http://www.axishost.com/contact.php links to a support page that then re-directs you to another support page (kind of gave me the impression you outsourced support to someone). It also contains the following:
Code:
Contact Sales:

(FORM HERE)
On your domain page, http://www.axishost.com/domains.php it links to an order page that gets a warning in firefox that the security certificate expired on 3/18/2006. The link to the bulk reseller account returns the following
Code:
Not Found
The requested URL /bulk/index.php was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache/1.3.34 Server at www.axishost.com Port 80
The copyright notice at the bottom of that same page page says "Copyright 2006 AxisHOST, Inc. All rights reserved. Ryan & Reed" and the "Ryan & Reed" is a link to http://www.ryanandreedabuse.com/ which seems to be a site about abuses by a debt collection agency:
Code:
Consumer Complaints Regarding Ryan and Reed, Ryan & Reed, Inc.
(also DBA Rawlins and Rivera, Rawlins & Rivera, Inc.)
I hope you see this as constructive criticism. Afaik, you have a good reputation, Tina, but the website really needs some work so it doesn't scare paranoid people like me off

Thanks David. I am aware of all of the issues you mention. We get so many new orders from word-of-mouth that I honestly don't depend on the website to bring in new accounts. I know I should put it as a higher priority, but I'm lazy when it comes to the website.

PS: Ryan and Reed is a debt collection agency that I have made my pet project to see them get prosecuted for illegal activities. They are bad news and by linking from my website, the PR has gone up on the R&R site...so, hopefully, more people will see it. Good Morning America actually did a piece on them about a month ago and the hits to that website spiked dramatically!

I have a dedicated server with AxisHost. I have to say, it's wonderful. It takes some getting used to though, as I used to have an unmanaged server that I could do things to on the fly. Now, I have to send in tickets to get things handled (no root access...which is fine with me) but again, tickets are answered VERY fast and professionally.

My group doesn't have their "real" site up yet, but if you want to see the speed, etc., here is our soon-to-be site: Absolute Internet.
