Well, for the standard x-ray safe machine, I've found that it's ok for my Flash USB pen drive, SD Media card with pictures and my Digital8 tapes. Haven't put HD through those things yet.

Backups, backups & more backups!

I've flown many a time with my laptop/camera's in my bag. Its all ok! They always go through the X-Ray scanners too, you'll find 80% of the time they'll want to check that things like laptops aren't fake/duds etc so you'll need to get it out for them to see.

Yeah, if you take it on your "on-board"/hand luggage then it'll need to be x-rayed, if you're even slightly worried, you can double check with the operator.
I've taken laptops on board before, and they've always asked me to turn it on, and they wait for it to load just to the login screen and sometimes ask you to pop the keyboard off so that they can check that there's nothing hidden.

You'll be suprised how many checked in bags now they are also randomly putting through a Xray machine now. So dont just think because its in your checked in luggage it wont get Xyayed.

I have went to many different states I went with a digital camera and many other things. Each time the x ray deal thingy..... did not hurt them at all. In fact I saw so many people with computers and ipods and many other things and they did not get hurt. You should be fine.

I have flown across country 8 times since October... digital cameras, two different laptops... no problem. All carry on. One time I forgot a film-type camera in my laptop bag... it got x-rayed and survived... much to my surpise.
Last night when I flew from California to North Carolina, they x-rayed my checked bags as well.... Have had that done a couple times that I know of, come to think of it.
I think they are pretty safe on delicate equipment. If in doubt, they will happily check it out in another fashion if requsted.

I hope they let me take all that on the plane, i will not part with it all that is worth alot of money!
They should let me on with a canon backpack and a laptop case? thats only 2 things.
My cloths and all will be in a differant bag that will be checked in and put under the plane or whatever they do with big bags.....i can live without that stuff if they loose it but not my high tech toys!

Maybe US Customs at Vancouver Airport are lazier than the average bear, but, I requested a manual search of my SmartPhone (yes, I was paranoid about it) and the security guard wouldn't do it. She demanded it go through the X-Ray. I was choked, but the phone turned out okay.

What I have done is brought a carry on bag as well a laptop or whatever it might be. You will have to put the laptop in the top carry bin or whatever it is called during take off as well about to land. Besides that you should have have any problems!

All of your clothes etc are tied in a big cargo net and dragged behind the plane, you think they can be bothered to actually put it inside the plane?
On a serious note:
Depending on the airline, you have a maximum weight that you can take, as well as a maximum volume. If I were you I'd try and get a backpack that will take all of that or they may get slightly annoyed with you having two bags.
As a guide assume that you can have 45" in the form of a 22" x 14" x 9" bag
So I'd seriously advise you buy a padded bag that is that size exactly and try to squeeze everything in!
