AMD, pretty much a proven fact AMD beats Intel off the block.

Raptors are nice, but if you need space and you get the 36 giger probably run out of space. You didn't say what raptor you can get so (yea).

Depends how you look at it. Speed of ram, Cas, ECC or not, some big factors.

Ive seen about the same performance.

Since you are hosting forums. I would say get a scsi drive.. Mainly because of all the sql you will be done.. Maybe even a drive just for mysql itself

Well, you sir are talking thru your hat, literally. You have no proof of what you say, and furthuermore, no valid argument.

Just browse around sites like anandtech, tomshardware etc, and you'll see that dual-cores generally tend to be a tad faster.

I would have to say go with AMD Opteron.
Why?
Value and speed. Your dollar goes farther when you purchase AMD.

Let's not even throw in power consumption but that really only applies to colocation customers.

my point of view,

dual core processors are faster in speed, but dual processors are more stable.

good luck

Dual Core faster than Dual Processor is a HUGE BS. This is the lamest comparison I've ever seen in my life, even the link AntX referred to should be ashamed from calling this a fair comparison. They used in the case of AMD different motherboards, completely different chipsets and better RAM. Then they come with the conclusion dual-core is faster !!

You know what I see ? I see a superior technology is faster, not a fair comparison in any way.

Dual Processors of the exact frequency and similar chipsets/configuration are faster than Dual-Cores. However, from experience you'll find AMD faster on Unix based systems, while Intel usually behaves better on Windows. I don't have articles to prove it, but 5 years of building servers and computer systems.

My recommendation go with AMD dual-core since this is UNIX system and the RAPTOR drives.

wrong! AMD did not beat Intel. from all the benchmark that i saw, both cpu do better on some area and off on certain area.
