We don't get to hear all of the chatter when iNet makes a big decision like this, but from what I understand, it might be done as a trial before it becomes permanent - six months, get feedback, revise, etc.
I have mixed feelings about it personally. I like the aggressive drive to reduce forum noise...but is it going too far?Studio1337___̴ı̴̴̡̡̡ ̡͌l̡̡̡ ̡͌l̡*̡̡ ̴̡ı̴̴̡ ̡̡͡|̲̲̲͡͡͡ ̲▫̲͡ ̲̲̲͡͡π̲̲͡͡ ̲̲͡▫̲̲͡͡ ̲|̡̡̡ ̡ ̴̡ı̴̡̡ ̡͌l̡̡̡̡.__Web Design0

... when MattF first sold WHT, this was actually the only thing I feared. Once this goes live its time for me to split...
Edited:
I dont soo much seeing this to be a problem with a business, but for those who make nothing off their site(s) (like me) and is not a host or whatever, it really sucks. IMO anyway.
This goes live, expect me to lurk exclusively up until they start charging to view the place.
I can see if filtering out pretty much everything in the lounge which incedently I generally hang out more... It'll filter out a lot of crap, but it'll filter out others (such as me). Then again, business is business and in the end, you gotta feed the wallet...Last edited by MGCJerry; 03-31-2006 at 11:28 PM.

With all due respect, the purpose of a forum is to:
1) make available good information for members and the general public to consume, and
2) make a profit.
This new policy does both. Think about how much crap this will filter out! And there's no arguing about the profits part.
/the_pm wonders whether mods will start getting paid...Studio1337___̴ı̴̴̡̡̡ ̡͌l̡̡̡ ̡͌l̡*̡̡ ̴̡ı̴̴̡ ̡̡͡|̲̲̲͡͡͡ ̲▫̲͡ ̲̲̲͡͡π̲̲͡͡ ̲̲͡▫̲̲͡͡ ̲|̡̡̡ ̡ ̴̡ı̴̡̡ ̡͌l̡̡̡̡.__Web Design0

I'd pay to advertise in the forums, but I wouldn't pay to help someone. I would pay to get help though.

Is WHT ditching RackSpace and moving to Hogwarts, too? I hear they have unlimited hard drives.

That's awful imo. What WHT come to a screeching halt.
edit:
"We feel this new system will be an easy transition for all members and greatly improve the quality of posts, while keeping WebHostingTalk accessible to all."
Riiiight..... Some people don't have a paypal account. I do. However some places cannot have paypal. So you are not making it accessible to all.
This won't go down smoothly.Last edited by Mark L; 03-31-2006 at 11:34 PM.

Well, they're going to have to work out a few bugs in this whole system, because not every country is allowed to participate in PayPal. I imagine they'll have to hack up user profiles to allow people to choose a default payment method. I would recommend queueing fees up to a certain monetary threshhold, to avoid undue processing charges.
None of this is all that hard to hack, luckily, even with everything having to be done custom. That still doesn't answer the question of whether it's a good idea though...Studio1337___̴ı̴̴̡̡̡ ̡͌l̡̡̡ ̡͌l̡*̡̡ ̴̡ı̴̴̡ ̡̡͡|̲̲̲͡͡͡ ̲▫̲͡ ̲̲̲͡͡π̲̲͡͡ ̲̲͡▫̲̲͡͡ ̲|̡̡̡ ̡ ̴̡ı̴̡̡ ̡͌l̡̡̡̡.__Web Design0

I thought it was just for the sales forums. The news post is worded poorly.
Patron: I'd like my free lunch please.
Cafe Manager: Free lunch? Did you read the fine print stating it was an April Fool's joke.
Patron: I read the same way I listen, I ignore the parts I don't agree with. I'm suing you for false advertising.
Cafe Owner: Is our lawyer still working pro bono?0

To be fair, it wasn't scheduled to be released until April 7 (check the date on it). Maybe it's still being revised?

You know, I would gladly accept a position as a professional forums poster within my areas of expertise if such a position existed. Yeah, I know there are posting services where you pay $20 for a couple hundred posts and whatnot, but I'm talking about a professional salary. That would certainly change my daily routine.
No wait, no it wouldn't. I'd just get paid to do what I do alreadyStudio1337___̴ı̴̴̡̡̡ ̡͌l̡̡̡ ̡͌l̡*̡̡ ̴̡ı̴̴̡ ̡̡͡|̲̲̲͡͡͡ ̲▫̲͡ ̲̲̲͡͡π̲̲͡͡ ̲̲͡▫̲̲͡͡ ̲|̡̡̡ ̡ ̴̡ı̴̡̡ ̡͌l̡̡̡̡.__Web Design0

Hmm, are the mods/ admins really online, but have the choice to choose "invisible mode"?Because it seems like some are posting, but shows they are offline.
