    * long time server usage, hard drive might be under pressure

i have a server with the planet for more than 18 months now.

recently, it has started giving troubles and whenever i restart (using remote reboot), it takes a lot of time, even 10 - 15 mintues, to maybe complete scandisk and then start.

the server has been under good load for past 1 and half year.

I now fear that the hard disk could be under some trouble.

Can anyone guide me on the same.

Should i ask the planet to replace the hard drive with a new one ( am not sure if they do, and how much will they charge for whole shifting to new drive )

or should i just buy a new server with them and get on with new things.

the server is having nearly 300 hosted websites, so moving wont be that easy.

    please suggest.

    thanks

Personally I would backup everything *ASAP* to an offsite account or perhaps ThePlanet's NAS backup system. Then, get a new HD, OS reload, restore. This time you may also want to get a secondary drive for backups.

Your best bet is to either call or open up a ticket in orbit and describe the problem as you see it. If the hdd is going bad TP will put in a new one for free. I would backup your important files, as backing up the whole hdd seems rather foolish. As its a lot of space and probably more than 50% of the drive you don't need.

    similar thing i have done.
copied important files to one other server
and sent the details of trouble to the planet
waiting for their reply on ticket

Try to remember depending on the size of your files, the amount of time that it will take to properly upload everything as well. Aside from the 2-3 hrs for a re-install, assuming full HD failure, then the configuration time of the server, and eventual uploading of the files, an easily accessible control panel backup solution can be great in times of need. In the off chance it happens while you're not around to begin the upload, most admins can do a restore of your files from an accessible remote backup location on your behalf, helping you to get things back online faster. In either case, do as much backups as you need now, then open a ticket for them to investigate, as you never know when that next reboot might be your last.

You can just have them stick the new drive in as slave, back everything up on there, then mount it as master.

they replied and said the following

    1. they will need me to give them some more information and proof if there is any hard disk issue.

    2. if i provide them the information, they will test the hard drive offline, they tell this will bring server down by 4 - 6 hours.

    3. then they will replace the drive, only if they find any troubles.
