Port Scanning? Abuse?

Hi,

I recieved an e-mail from layeredtech.com that they disconnected my server due to port scanning abuse.

I do not know what port scanning is? I only use this server as a simple means to host a few websites...

How could it be that I was disconnected for port scanning. I do not even know of such a term.

Is this a product of hackers?

If there is anyone out there who may know what is going on please I beg you to e-mail me to my alt. email addy

sightlessnet@yahoo.com

Or if anyone would detail this to me... Or possibly help me thru this problem on my server... Once it logged back on if it ever will be.

Or if anyone could be a kind soul and call me about this situation, and what i can do! my number is 909-489-7417

Fellow WHT user.

Does anyone else have root or shell access on your server?

Yes, port scanning (assuming such "attacks" are originating from your server) is "a method for testing weaknesses of a computer or network by scanning or probing system ports via requests for information."

Popular programs for such potentially malicious "attacks" are nmap (for windows/*nix).

There is nothing wrong with doing a port scan or two (most providers do not care) however as stated above, if you probe the wrong machine per se, you can get in legal trouble; some consider port scanning to be penetrating and/or attempting to break into the network.

Welcome to the politics of the Service Provider vs [what they try to label] "Hackers"

909 area code? what part of california are you in?

Usually these things happen from php scripts being exploited an attackers executing commands.
