i want to ask about the ip ... what do i get when i have an ip from my hosting company more than the companies that dont give me an ip address ?

Yes SSL is about all you can do with a private IP. But if you see a host and say the package you want does not offer an IP the host will usually give you one if you have a vaild reason for it.. ie: SSL

I don't know why no one ever talks about having multiple domain names pointing to the same web server. This is a problem if you use host header resolution and your provider charges you $10 for every domain name you want to point to your server.

For example, you own the domain name
* acesandeights.com
but you also want to use
* acesandeights.org
* acesand8s.com
* acesneights.com
* acesn8s.com

You can administer the domain name resolution yourself and have them all point to the same IP without calling your hosting service's customer support.

Besides SSL another feature that will not work with named based sites is anonymous FTP. The current FTP spec. does not send any type of "host header" when connecting so ther can only be one traditional anonymous account per ip address.

Anonymous ftp works just fine with proftpd on ipless accounts.

just specify the login name the same as you would a virtual ftp account for an ipless domain

Another good reason for having your own IP Address is that usually all of your own services run off that IP like Pop3 and SMTP, the main advantage of this is that when you share an IP with multiple people if one of those people sends off a spam campaign, and someone blocks that persons IP Address, you will be blocked too. A unique IP to you will sometimes allow you to still send email while only the spammer is blocked from sending mail. Of course sometimes they will ban an entire range so you can still be affected by the spammer with a unique IP.

Actually one other thing, if you have a server with cpanel, your email address usernames would be username@domain.com with a static ip they would all be username.

I don't see any need for having a unique IP for a shared hosting account unless the user needs it for SSL or anonymous FTP. I mean, what difference does it make if you have to type in "username" or "username@domain.com" when you setup your account in your email client? Also most companies give you subdomains (i.e. ftp.yourdomains.com, mail.yourdomain.com) which you can use if you want that.

I've seen companies that offer dedicated IP with every account and I personally think that is a waste of good IP addresses.

I have no idea the difference but I know that is one , read it on the cpanel forums the other day.

A unique IP is typically needed if you want your own SSL cert (if you're using the shared SSL provided by many hosts for free, you don't need a unique IP).

Another reason might be anonymous FTP, though if you just have a couple of files you want people to be able to download you can just do that via HTTP more easily anyway. I know we are happy to give out unique IP addresses for free if justified, as are most other hosts.

Lastly, search engines used to block the IP addresses of sites trying to spam them. So for example if Host Y has 50 sites on an IP address, and one of them attempts to spam a search engine, the entire IP would be blocked -- including all other sites sharing it.

HOWEVER, search engines now no longer do this as they know that sites now share IP's frequently due to the shortage and the need to conserve them. So really there is nothing to worry about, especially if the host doesn't host adult sites.
