is it a good idea to place an autographed photo inside a book? I thought the ink of the autograph may smudge or come off quicker. What are some good ways to preserve (protect) the photo?

Do not apply a lot of pressure to the autographed area on the photograph. Inside of a large book isn't the ideal place for your treasure to live. Place it inside of a zip-loc baggy, free from any "new" air, dust, cigarette smoke, etc. Keep it in a dry place away from direct sunlight, high heat, animals, children, etc. etc.

I'd stick it on the top shelf of your wine rack in a baggy and you'll be good to go.
