I would get the Opteron, becuase I prefer AMD. You are just encouraging a CPU war here, do some google searches and check out benchmarks.

Opteron for me, highend Intel Xeon's just eat power.

But like Alex said, this is just another war, if you can say what the server would be used for and what O/S, maybe we could inform you better.

I'm not trying to encourage a war. I apologize. I will be using it for cPanel Hosting. Dynamic pages, static pages, mySQL you name it. I've been hosting for a while now on a Dual Xeon 3.0 Irwindale (RAID 10) and It is time to get a second box. I simply wish to get input if you have used them before. Can they take a bigger load? Are they worth the price (ESPECIALLY after their recent price cut)?

Thanks Again

I have a Dual Opteron 246 w/ 4GB RAM, Tyan Board..... It's a great box. I bought it for MYSQL Performance since AMDs bench better for MYSQL.

I am a HUGE Intel fan, my server is Intel my desktop pc's are Intel. But a AMD Opteron is going to kick the crap out of a Xeon processor. The thing about Intel is their rock solid and very stable. My next server is going to be a dual Opteron server.

The same can be said about AMD. This isin't AMD of the K6 days... but a great company building solid CPU's. Normally stability problems are due to other hardware like the motherboard, chipset and memory. If you use quality hardware then you shouldn't problems. But if you do then it's probably due to the drivers or OS.

Its hardly fair to compare a quad opteron to a dual xeon dontcha think? The choice should be as clear as day here, even if they were both only duals the opteron would win out in almost every test, but a quad versus a dual isn't even worth asking about IMHO.

Quad opterons! Wow thats going to be VERY fast. Opterons tend to be better value for money to xeons (AMD to intel)
