Moving MySQL to /home... is it secure ?

I am having a problem with my /var partition. It is running out of space constantly. So I thought I would move MySQL and create a directory link from var/lib/mysql to the new folder. First I thought I should move it to /usr but this partition is full, too. So I thought I'd move it to /home but is this safe and will it work on a Linux server with Cpanel ? I mean could a hacker maybe get access to the new MySQL dir more easily or are there any other reasons why I shouldn`t do that ?

Or is there an easy way to change the size of a partition without deleting it's content i.e. taking away some space from /home and assigning it to /var. Is this something I can do without deleting files ?

The server is Centos, Cpanel and /home is the only partition that has enough space left.

You can move /var/lib/mysql to /home. I don't see any issues in the security aspect of the move or the functioning of mysql after the moves, since the folders /var/lib/mysql/database has 700 permissions and ownership of mysql.

Thank you But I just found I had a 700 MB error log file in the mySQL dir. Must have grown big over the years. I did delete it and now it all seems fine.

I would check my logrotate setup on such a system to see why is isn't acting on th emysql logs (maybe it has never been told to, or maybe there is an error in the configuration).

re: the original question - I don't think having it in /home will be any less secure than having it in /usr as long as you make sure the file/dir permissions are correct in the new location.

As I found out the eximstats.sends DB was broken and each time the server tried to access it it did add an entry in the error log within /var/lib/mysql. That`s how it grew up to 700 MB.
