Multimode to Singlemode Fiber Converter
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good, reliable multimode to singlemode fiber converter for gigabit ethernet?
Thanks!

You can try "media converter" on ebay. Or use a switch to convert them.

You should also be able to get a conditioning cable to go from single to multi... i've never used them though, so don't know how effective they are.
Probably best getting a switch that can take SFP's, and getting a single mode and multimode switch

To add another thought... you wouldn't get link status if you did it using a switch; which could be a pain in certain environments.
ie: You lose the single mode, the multimode would stay up. Unless you could somehow track the interface?

You can track the switch interface status with SNMP

Try Transition Networks on the web. You will find what you are looking for there. Their website will have links for companies that sell their products

Hi Dennis,
indeed you could track it and hash together some scripts that when a trap is sent from the switch disable the other port.
Personally, if it was for something IP based, i'd prefer the use of an IGP of sorts.

check out MRV and Omnitron Systems for high end units. Also look at Allied Telesyn.

Those other manufactures are good too, but no one has the vast number of converters that Transition Networks has, nor do they have the lifetime warranty all transition products carry. Plus, Transition products are assembled in the USA....
