I found the resolution in a post made by elix at http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=492338. The problem was in the path setting for extension_dir and the eaccelerator.so.

Well, your issue might be the : .//ea/eaccelerator-0.9.3/modules/eaccelerator.so .Why is it shoing a double slash ??? "//"
It should show just ./ea/eaccelerator-0.9.3/modules/eaccelerator.so

That should be the reason, PHP loads extensions from extension_dir list of directories. Try copying the .so file to the standard extension_dir paths or the same location as the .php itself

Yes, that was the reason. The extension_dir was: ./
and the extension was /usr/local/xxx
When they were put together, it ended up with a .//usr/local/xxx
