Question

Advice: What are good names to start with based on my requirements?

Greetings,

I am currently in the midst of checking around to determine whether or not my website would be best off searching and migrating to a better website host. Whilst I don't have major problems with my current one, I find that sometimes their tech support isn't as good as I would like it to be and also that many times when they say they've done something I only find out a day or two later that the thing they've said they done actually isn't done.

As such I'm looking around for a good website host on a budget. Being a student, I don't have all that much money to spare. I'd be willing to spend as much as 10 euros per month or $12 maximum. Does anyone have good addresses to suggest?

Below are the specs that I'm trying to get:

Minimum Space: 1GB of Hard Space.
My current site is about half of that space, so I figure 1GB will give us plenty of room for the time being.

Minimum Bandwidth: 1GB per month
Same comment.

Frontpage Requirements: Frontpage 2003 Extensions Fully supported
Absolutely necessary.

E-Mail Services Requirements:
Minimum 10 proper e-mail accounts with ability to use Outlook.
Unlimited forwarders
Mailing lists supported (minimum 2)

(I've had problems with my previous host so want to be absolutely certain e-e-mails sent using an open-source CMS will arrive at their destinations!)

Uptime Requirements:
99.9% please.

(I've also had problems with my previous host on this particular point).

Tech Support Requirements:
Good tech support is a must. One that responds in a timely fashion and actually has intelligent answers.

Sub-Domains Fully Supported
My site currently uses 5 sub-domains. Full sub-domain support is thus a must.

Other Requirements:
Domain redirects (I hope to have the .com and .org redirect to .net)
Awstats
PHP 5++
Perl
Apache 2

You should have no problem finding a host with these requirements although most hosts do not usually provide information on the version of services they are running. I would say go find a good host that you like, and try to contact their support department to see if they are running PHP5/Apache2. You could contact a few different providers and then go from there.

Good luck with your search.

Is there any particular reason as to why you need Apache2?

Hi f9-Gene,

No reason in particular, it was actually recommended by some of the developers of a content management system I use as part of my website as being the latest version of Apache.

But if that's still uncommon - then I know for sure the CMS has been running fine on my current website host and they're using standard stuff really.

For me the most important is reliability and having all the necessary setup to make that CMS work perfectly.

Many companies are now supporting PHP5, what comes to mind is CatsHosting.

Good luck with your search.

Evening AOM!

The majority of providers don't yet use apache2/php5 (mainly dependent on which control panel's they use) -- you requested the "latest" versions in #e107 but that doesn't necessarily mean that the latest is required to run e107.

Now to ensure that php isn't exploitable you'll want at least version 4.4.2 or higher. Apache is sufficient with version 1.3 or higher: Now that doesn't mean requesting the latest is a 'bad thing' but it's not required to run e107.

Even e107.org runs with: php 4.4.2 and apache 1.3

You will not have a lot of choices if you decide to go with Apache 2 and PHP5. As David mentioned above, you should be fine with finding a web host that supports the latest version of PHP and apache 1.x

Thanks David for that information. I can easily live with that then. Does that then mean the list will be quite large of potential hosts?

CatsHosting is then one of the candidates, f9-gene?

Thanks for your help guys (and gals, if that's the case)!

AOM,

It would expand the list quite a bit -- never hurts to have more options though. There's a lot of quality providers out there: Just remember not to waiver too far from your original requirements like support!

Thanks David for the information,

So based on the requirements - are there any specific names that spring to mind? I swear, buying a computer's so much easier than sniffing out the numerous names!
