1 and 1

Hi,

This is my first post here, been lurking for the past couple months.

I am looking to consolidate some of my sites. I have 45 sites at the moment between 2 hosts. I feel I have outgrown my current hosts and would like to launch some more server and space intensive applications. I need php / mysql / gd 2 / some control panel / urchin stats preferred 80 GB + hard drive / 512 ram (1 GB preferred).

I am considering Media Temple, who I know is good, but is a little pricey at the moment for me.

How come no one here seems to have mentioned 1and1.com?

I am strongly considering their Managed Server II plan. It looks like it has just about everything I need and $150 / mo. is a good budget for me.

Just curious why searching '1 and 1' or '1&1' yields nothing on this forum.

Thanks for any advice or insight.

I went ahead and set up a Dedicated Virtual at Media Temple.

The only thing holding me back was only 9 GB storage, but I guess I can upgrade as required.

Also about the 1 and 1 thing... I did find posts here about it. It just didn't pick up in the search for some reason.

If you can afford it, MT are known for their outstanding service and highly advanced system. I think you are paying for the level of quality more than the specification when it comes to them. They are certainly the daddy of cool!

Not sure why 1&1 don't get so much of a mention around these parts - they are more of the quick fire, sell it cheap provider in my eyes. Just out there to sell to as wider market as possible - which in some cases works.

But if you are looking for just a dedicated server, that might be just what you need if you are powering your own platform.. if your just after hardware, they might do the job.

Take it your looking for an american based host?

For your need,
i Think an VPS with 20GB space /300GB BW / 512 RAM should do the job.

Take a look at MyVpsHost, i'm sure they have somgthing for you with less than 60$

Angry Personal expierience of 1&1

I've used 1&1 from a UK point and I would stay steer well clear of them. The reasons;

1. Technical support is bordering on the incompetent.

- I've been told that PayPal would only accept one currency (wrong, we have ZenCart using multi currency through the same PayPal account without any changes to the PayPal end).

2. Their "Shared SSL" doesn't work for some applications.

- It relies on rewriting your HTML on the fly as it passes through an SSL enabled proxy site. Unfortunately the re-writing doesn't always work and misses things (such as sort order buttons on SugarCRM), and thus some thing just don't work.

3. We've had to point out to them that some of their advertising is wrong and deliberately misleading.

- Try using a "Multi-Currency" 1&1 eShop with PayPal. You can advertise prices in the eShop in many currencies, but it will only pass one currency to PayPal. This means you show a customer a price in Australian Dollars, they get to PayPal and the price has been converted into GBP (or whatever your native currency is), and the customer is then charged whatever their credit card company converts the GBP value into, which is bound to be different to the value you showed them, and thus illegal in many countries.

4. Their hosting packages have problems with mail.

- I've seen newsletter subscription emails generated from a php script on a site bounced because the 1&1 servers are listed in Spam RBLs.

- The 1&1 mail logs show any emails sent as being forwarded to one of three IP addresses in a mail cluster and so you can't tell if the recipients mail server has received the mail.

- We've had mail which the 1&1 log says was sent to the cluster, but the recipient doesn't receive it (yes, they didn't have any filtering on and other recipients received the same email).

5. Tech support response is very, very slow

- I've had to wait several days for a response to a "Your logs say the mail was sent from a php script on our email , the recipient didn't receive it", and the response just said "We don't offer scripting support"?!?! (See 3 for why we couldn't check if it had been delivered).

- I've seen emails saying "...Due to a significant increase in the number of support inquiries... there may be a slight delay in response times" as an auto response, and even when we don't it's still a couple of days before we see anything.

To sum it up I'm researching hosting provider so when the minimum contract expires for the people I consult for I can move their systems elsewhere.

Yea, I would have simply edited my post, but I can't seem to find the edit button here .

Within hours I was logged into my server via Plesk.

I must say I can already tell Media Temple is the shizzle fo'shizzle.

I figure this is enough to get me going and hopefully I will grow into a dedicated server with them soon.

Thanks for the responses from everyone though.

1and1 from a US point of view.

The pricing is now much higher.

The external firewall is somewhat useless, its limited to 20 rules.

The turn around time to fix things is measured in days, not hours or minutes.

It takes a good 20-30 minutes of hold time to talk to a person.

Much has already been said, but I'll add my two cents... I've talked to a lot of people who have had problems with them--especially with email problems.

I had a plan with them and it seemed to always be up and down.
