    Server Management - Beginner

    Anyone have any guides or advice for a complete novice wanting to purchase dedicated hosting, I've looked at some hosts and is a firewall really necessary as it adds $$$ to the monthly cost, would really like some advice as a fully managed server is out of the question because of cost...

    You can get a fully managed server for a very low cost. Check the offers section.

    You could also think about hiring a management firm such as got-management.com to look after your server. They will also explain what exactly they did and how. A server management company should be more than just management, they should also consult with you, should you request it. And got-management.com is very good at that. Check them out.

    Do not. Repeat - DO NOT rent a dedicated server if you're a complete newbie. Internet is already full of zombie-servers.

    You should consider either:

    1. Read books and learn yourself at your local home (non-production) network and only then, after AT LEAST couple of months of intense 18-hours workdays, rent yourself an unmanaged server, connected to internet;

    2. Shell out some more $$$ and get a managed server or, even better, a sysadmin.

    Good luck! It looks like you gonna need it.

    P.S. No books, no online resources will ever be equivalent to hard practice.

    yeah doesn't sound like you are up to running a server yourself, a company reselling server with management added on tend to be cheaper, i have servers with servstra.com and am very happy with their service, they are fully managed.

    It all depends on what you want to do with the server, I suggest you look into setting up a local server and play with it for a while, many things we enjoy at home are not available at a server farm or colocation facility.

    Any high-end managed vps plan from reputable company will suffice for this, I'd say. Consider signing with PowerVPS.

    Good luck!

    I agree with everyone here,

    If you have no experience with a dedicated server, a manged server, or a VPS will be the best way to go!
