Question

.htaccess file question

twice now my .htaccess file has been "altered", I use it for mod_rewrite and something is changing this file so that my site no longer works.

is it possible for something on my server to alter .htaccess, or could something in WHM do it?

ownership on the file is root, and properties are set to 644.

Are you adding php directives in your htaccess? If the server has phpsuexec, adding php directives into htaccess will cause a 500 error. Create a php.ini file and place your directives there.

yes, exactly, but it works fine, there have just been two times now where the file is "corrupted".

Yep, learned my lesson there and now I keep copies of the all-important config files of the server.

CPanel/WHM will update and remove any MOD_REWRITE directives from an htaccess file if you secure directories, use image hotlinking, use redirects and so on.

THis is the reason I am moving all my servers away from CPanel as I have to make major edits to .htaccess each time i want to change the littleist thing
