Bluehost.com: A Review
I have been with BlueHost for about a month now, and while going through the other posts on this forum, found that they are pretty lax about the support. But my experience says otherwise.
I wanted a basic web-host, my current clients do not need server-side stuff, and so the low rates of Bluehost perfectly suited me. Hence the choice.
Anyway, I have asked about four support questions till date, and all of them have been responded to pretty fast. In fact, one of my clients decided to cancel their web expansion plans and I had to cancel one of my accounts with Bluehost, and they did it instantly. This was on a saturday, so I don't know if the claim that they don't have support on weekends has a point any more.
As regards to the actual server performance, I have had no real issues. The site has been up and running smoothly since day one. And while I repeat, that I am not using any server side stuff, except for a few form mailers, there have been no problems as such.
Registration for a new account (and domain) is pretty smooth, and you can start uploading your files immediately. Setting up new emails and ftp accounts is a breeze, and the Control Panel does the job fairly decently.
I'll keep you all posted about further stuff, if I encounter any problems.

Thanx for sharing these experiences.
The usual follow-up question: Would you mind telling us what domain you have hosted with them?

I guess that should not be a problem at all: The domain is upshygiene.com.
What's with this board not allowing me to put in an URL? It says I need to have atleast five posts. I mean come on, I understand that some people might mis-use the linking feature, but this is kind of limiting.

That makes for some 4-5 days, as the domain was created on: 10-Jan-06.

I was pretty happy with Bluehost until I started doing things beyond basic HTML.
Today I called them to get a static IP and private SSL cert. Since I got off of the phone with them at 1:30pm PST my site has been down. 8 hours now. I logged into my email and found out that they had run out of static IP's. Ok, so WHY IS MY SITE DOWN?
I'm pretty upset with Bluehost right now. I called their customer support. They're closed but they have an emergency line. The guy that answered the phone basically said that he can't get hold of any techs and that my site may be down until MONDAY!
Monday people... for a production business website. I have customers getting 404's and other garbage right now.
Anyone have any suggestions for a full featured host that supports mySQL, SSL, SSH Shell, Apache with mod_rewrite?
I think I'm through with Bluehost.
Karim
P.S. I'd offer you my site URL but it's just a "not configured" Bluehost splash page...

We won't mind. Please do let us know what domain you host with them, so that we can validate your review. Thank you!

As an addendum, I was actually quite pleased with them for a while. Except for their penchant for doing maintenance during peak e-commerce hours it wasn't too bad. They really supported me fairly well as a power user.
I'm afraid that if I move to another host I'm going to have to put up a fight for SSH access and support for external mySQL tools. PHPmyAdmin just ain't my cup-o-tea.

Thank you karim for your cooperation. Your domain is indeed hosted by Bluehost, and apparently not very succesfully (at least momentarily).
Best of luck getting them to help you!
Make sure you get control over your domain first before you cancel and move out. I see it's in Bluehost's name at the moment http://whois.sc/fluenthome.com

Yes indeed it is. Do you have any suggestions on how to "get control" of my domains from them? We have 5 or so with them at the moment and that's my primary concern. I've already backed up all of our files to our home development server.

E-mail them to remove the lock from your domain, and transfer it immediately afterwards to a domain registrar. It's that simple, hopefully they will not hassle you about this

He did.
And he either lied or couldn't remember that the Domain name was only Registered 5 days ago. Wonder what the bogus Review is all about?
