Dreamhost has to be kidding
Dreamhost has finally crossed the threshold of complete insanity in terms of their disk space and bandwidth alotments. If you haven't seen this yet, check their site. A terabyte of bandwidth and 20 gigs of space for 8 bucks a month. They've been heading down this path of insanity for a little over a year now, and they've finally put the nail in the coffin. There's no doubt whatsoever that they're massively overselling as a marketing tactic, and as someone who's been with Dreamhost since before all this insanity started, it makes me feel a bit insecure about the continued quality of their service.

True, but ...
Most (all) competitors are making similar offers;
Customers in that part of the market are often attracted by size & price;
They can't afford to lose out on new business or be outcompeted;
The customers in that segment have not suddenly developed the ability to use 20G/1T.
So, in practice, it will not be as bad as it looks.

I dunno why, but I get a feeling of advertisement from this post. I could be wrong, but for you to register an account right now to just post about DreamHost's "insane" and "crazy" deals just seems so fishy. But hey, cannot knock the game I suppose as they say.

Well reasoned Dormouse. It's simply an adaptation to market realities. It may very well be that after ipowerweb, hostsave, 1nd1, godaddy and many other names have switched to jumbo shared hosting packages, dreamhost's sales have suffered. As such, their management and marketing teams had to react in some way. We'll be seing more and more of these huge packages as time goes by.

Not necessarily fishy, just making it very very hard to use all that data transfer due to CPU usage limitations.

<< snip >> Is it really so competitive around here that a perfectly reasonable post has to se suspected of advertising? The fact is, I'd just read my email and seen the announcement, and in disbelief, decided to air my grievances on these boards.

I actually hadn't realized there was an occurrence of packages like this across the board, as I haven't looked at hosting sites in a while. Is this sudden increase a result of superior technology or are packages just becoming really inflated?

Very fishy indeed 1 post just to explain about this host and also the price is so cheap. If you are intrested in this deal I recommend you don't go for it.

Boy would it be fun to setup a download mirror system that takes advantage of these offers in mass and see what happens. Well, maybe I should hush up and get with the program and increase my offerings....
Gotta love this industry

I don't see why there was a need to tell me off. As I said, I could be wrong, but I said what I thought could have also been a reason for this post. It just seems fishy and according to dkhosting, I am not the only one who thinks so. I apologize if I offended you in some mysterious way, but I would ask that you not try to make it into such a big deal.

I just think it's pathetic that you guys are apparently so hung up in this business that the mere mention of a host company's prices, even in a negative context regarding overselling, gets you all up in arms. If I were advertising I'd have been all jazzed about this package, not afraid that they're sacrificing their integrity.

Notice a trend between package growth and complaints concerning hosts?
Because I certainly have.
With some of the big names (site5, dreamhost, lunarpages) espescially you can see the trend of packages increasing, complaints increasing and praise decreasing.
Might just be coincidence but I don't see competition based on packages/pricing to be the best way to go about thing: I've seen the damage it can do firsthand even with great management being involved. It's a very dangerous route for a company to take.
Note: Now this may not actually be the case with these 3 as they have sufficient rules in place to ensure you don't get to use your package entirely whereas the companies I've worked for previously didn't have these limits in place: If you bought it, you got to use it.

They are taking overselling to the max ... It seems more like a desperate cry for sales then a well constructed business model.

This coming from the guy who breaks the rules and PM's people offers!
Sure thing capitan.
Now I don't agree that the post was an ad: I think these types of packages will hurt a provider in the end.
