DELL SAN/NAS Server Setup Info Required.

I'm tyring to ascertain what are "all" the necessary components, to implement a SAN/NAS.

I was browsing over the various SAN deals on eBay, it seems other than the RAID Unit itself (which is the Dell PowerVault), one would need the PowerVault Switch (presumably to connect all the SAN units to it)?

    Some "QLogic FC Controller Cards"

Is that it? My questions in particular are as follows:

    1. Would this SAN unit require a Server? Yes/No?

    2. The QLogic FC Controller Cards, where are they inserted? (into the servers to which we want the SAN unit to communicate with?) or "IN" the SAN unit itself?

    3. How does the switch come into play?

    Any help/comment is much appreciated.

You should have a server act as the "head" for the system.

All you need is a set of raid cards. I'd suggest the LSI/Dell Perc cards. They go in the server.

We use Dell 2650s and PV 220s with 146 Gb SCSI drives in raid for our enterprise backup system. It works very well.

You could always just buy dell's iSCSI solution:

I'd recommend iSCSI over FC, as well. It's *significantly* cheaper, doesn't require you do any additional wiring and should be very close to the same speed in most applications. Unless you're pushing these systems to the absolute edge and need every little bit of speed (at a much higher cost), iSCSI is the way to go.
