Question

Critic asks :: How many of you knew that yesterday was the Winter or Summer Solstice?

Evening WHTers

Yesterday, December 21st was for the Northern Hemisphere [where i am] the Winter Solstice, and for instance in New Zealand and the Southern Hemisphere, it was the Summer Solstice.

Are those days and others like them in the calendar, ones that you instinctively know of or look out for??

Does Midwinter's Sunrise or Sunset mean anything to you at all??

If you do have an interest in the subject, you might want to take the time out to listen to this BBC programme called "A Light in Winter" >>

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio...ight_in_winter

DESCRIPTION

The winter solstice celebration at Newgrange monument, Ireland, is an awe-inspiring event that has taken place annually for more than 5000 years. As the sun's rays clear the horizon on the shortest day of the year, they illuminate, in perfect alignment, a 19-metre passage and chamber which contains the remains of our long dead ancestors.

The chamber is older than Stonehenge or the Pyramids and Trevor Barnes has gained rare access to the event to experience it for himself - joining the handful of people who are selected by lottery from more than 25,000 applicants.

We celebrate winter solstice (Yule) and it has much more meaning to us then Christmas day (Mithra's birthday).

If you don't mind me asking, when you say that you " celebrate" the Winter Solstice or Yule, what does that entail? What do you do?

This will not be news to you of course but this time of year has had a dedicated feast day(s) for millennia, so is that it or is it more ritual or something not quite so regimented or a mixture?

Mithra's Birthday? As in the Persian Sun God?

Though i'm big on my history and have looked into Druidry a bit, i am still pretty ignorant in this area, so if you wouldn't mind humouring the questions.

Thanks

Critic,

I knew it was the solstice and I celebrated it by being freezing cold.

It is all the same as Christmas stuff as Christmas traditions are just copy of solstice celebrations. Some differences are that there is no angels on our tree and no mentions of the jesus. We have more apple like decorations on the tree then you see on most of other Christmas trees. We light more candles. One other thing that is different then Christmas it that my wife planted bunch of barley in small plates few weeks ago, so we have those things sitting around (should be wheat, but they do something to wheat here so it does not grow, and the more it grows the better the year ahead will be).

Did you know that Jesus was actually born in April and not December? The only reason Christians celebrate on December 25th was in hopes of squashing the Pagan celebrations of Winter Solstice and giving that date a new meaning/cause for celebration.

Also, it is commonly accepted that Jesus was born probably 6 years before the actual year that our calendar is based on. King Herrod was dead for approximately 2 years when we officially started counting the years...and the Bible clearly says that King H did everything he could in his power to prevent Jesus from becoming an adult or reaching any kind of King status. That couldn't have happened if he King H was dead.

So, its actually probably closer to 2012 right now, and not 2006.

What are your sources? I've heard from quite a few places that Christ's birth was more like 4 years off, not 6. Also, almost all estimates I've heard for the time of year for Christ's birth are in the fall. I've heard more specific estimates from some (including the month and even the date), but from what I know there is no consensus, or even an acknowledgment that the date can be known for sure.

The shepherds were in the fields with their sheep. That only happens when the ewes are ready to give birth and they have to fend off wild animals that are attracted by the blood. That time is in the Spring or April-ish. Any other time of the year the sheep roam free. Also, there is astrological evidence that says Jupiter was in the right place at the right time for "the star" story (April 17th, to be exact).

Plus, they were going to Bethleham to pay their taxes...and we all know that tax time is in April.

Yeh There are lots of things about Jesus being born 4-5 years earlier and at a different type of year. Does it really matter when he was born, it was the fact THAT HE WAS BORN that matters.
