    sgth,

Go ahead and use 216.151.153.254 , if there are too many ICMP requests to a certain IP in a certain period our firewalls will block the traffic.

    - Yes, it is on a 100 Mbps port.
    - The processor is a Prescott design which is a HT platform.
    - FreeBSD 5.x is installed by default (other OS's are available) and Cpanel/WHM is an additional $15/mo.
    - All of our servers are on APC MasterSwitches.

Almost forgot, the server includes up to /29 (5 usable) non-IRC IP's with proper justification.

I tried pinging that IP address and im still getting severe packet loss.

How will this firewall impact the server if i have a lot of traffic?

In all honesty, i'm not sure what your issue is. We have not been receiving any complaints, our monitors do not show any issues, and you're the only one i've been approched by that has these issues.

    My diagnosis is as follows:

    From hyperspin.com:

    Server : BLCC Core
    Test : Ping Test
    Current Status : UP
    Next Test : Dec 18 2005 11:26 AM
    Uptime : 100.000%
    Uptime including maintenance : 100.000%
    Maintenance : 00min
    Downtime : 00min
    Outage : 0
    Monitored Duration : 14day 09hr 05min

    From just-ping.com:

location result min. rrt avg. rrt max. rrt
    Santa Clara, U.S.A. Okay 12.2 13.4 17.2
    Austin, U.S.A. Okay 37.9 38.1 39.0
    New York, U.S.A. Okay 72.1 73.1 79.1
    Florida, U.S.A. Okay 64.3 88.3 158.5
    London, United Kingdom Okay 159.8 160.0 160.2
    Amsterdam, Netherlands Okay 169.0 169.1 169.3
    Sydney, Australia Okay 164.0 164.2 164.4
    Hong Kong, China Okay 205.6 278.8 526.2
    Stockholm, Sweden Packets lost (10%) 205.1 206.7 208.5
    Paris, France Packets lost (10%) 186.7 187.1 187.7
    Nürnberg, Germany Okay 183.8 184.8 191.4

Their packet loss stats probably aren't incredibly accurate since they also show google.com dropping packets (allegedly):

location result min. rrt avg. rrt max. rrt
    Santa Clara, U.S.A. Okay 79.0 79.9 83.1
    New York, U.S.A. Okay 29.5 30.0 31.4
    Austin, U.S.A. Okay 26.7 27.0 27.5
    Florida, U.S.A. Okay 26.6 30.8 63.8
    Amsterdam, Netherlands Packets lost (10%) 115.8 116.0 116.3
    Sydney, Australia Okay 233.1 233.5 234.4
    Stockholm, Sweden Okay 147.8 148.2 148.7
    Hong Kong, China Okay 254.3 288.1 433.0
    London, United Kingdom Okay 214.0 214.3 214.8
    Paris, France Packets lost (10%) 92.1 94.8 106.7
    Nürnberg, Germany Packets lost (10%) 104.8 104.9 105.2

My answer to your question is this:

99%+ of the internet will be able to see your server and will be able to do so without packet loss or latency. Our firewalls know how to tell the diffrence between excessive amounts of ICMP, DDoS attacks, etc. and legitimate traffic.

    boysee and elix,

I already addressed that, the correct IP to use is 216.151.153.254 as all the people hitting .151.254 have caused the firewall to deny ICMP to that address.

I can assure you those results are way outside the norm, our network has 2 Gbps of throughput that has not even begun to reach capacity.

Perhaps you would be willing to post a traceroute so we can see exactally where you're testing from?

The MTR looks okay but I was only getting around 50-60KB/s before whereas I usually get 400-700KB/s.

But, I can't test right as the test.rar file returns 404.

    rackdog.com,

Please have a look at http://www.blacklotus.net/dedicated/ , all of our upgrade pricing is listed there.

    elix,

I'm not getting a 404 on the test file, it downloads for me. What kind of speeds do you get from hosts that don't route via WVFiber?

I can attest to the fact that BLCC has an awesome network - if you're hesitant to buy because of the firewall, please don't give it a second thought. I have been and am an extremely happy client of BL's.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that BLCC has an amazing staff that are always able and willing to help. They're right on target and know what they're doing.

    elix,

I just spoke with my technical support and obtained a shell account that I can let you on for the purposes of testing ingress/egress routes and download speeds. You should have access to ftp and wget.

If this interests you (or anyone else reading this who wants to test our network) please feel free to contact me.

These offers are good until sold out or until close of business Friday. Special #2 is quite popular, we are close to selling out of that particular unit.
