Question

Building big cPanel server - how many accounts?

I have experience hosting ~300 accounts on cPanel servers with 2GB ram, 3.0Ghz P4 processors and 200GB drives. It works pretty good, although I'm still working on optimization. I'm looking to step it up a notch. I'm currently looking at buying:
Dual Xeon 3.4ghz
4GB ECC RAM
3.2TB usable storage

Software:
Fedora Core 2 OS
cPanel

Disk space won't be an issue, I can manage that. But how many hosting accounts can I expect to handle? Figure light to moderate use websites, with 20 pop accounts each used. I am just trying to count the cost of buying this server with that much storage.

What are others getting with similar hardware?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Honestly it sounds like total overkill with that much storage but I figure 400-600 resonable size accounts but it is "How long is a piece of string question"

Well the idea is to give each customer 10GB of space. What kind of hardware would be needed to handle ~2000 cpanel accounts?

You really want to go for multiple servers for that. I suppose you would be looking at Quad Opterons with Dual Core, 16GB RAm, Very fast disk subsystem..

Multiple servers will give you a lot less headaches
