    Support Site Location

Should a support site for a web host be located at a different location as all the client servers and also use different DNS servers?

What do you fellas do about your support pages?

    mpaert,

My own is located on an entirely different server in a different DC.
While it doesn't use different DNS servers: The DNS boxes are also located in two seperate DC's as well.

Not the 'perfect' setup - but better than most.
I'd always recommend having a 3rd party emergency e-mail contact as well.

sounds about right... I'm just looking at domain names for the support site. Bloody hell, they're all taken (web-host-support and so forth....)

    mpaert,

Why have entirely different domain names? That could confuse clients.
A subdomain pointing at an alternate server is sufficient.

Could i do this at the registrar level or would it first have to go to our main DNS server?

    mpaert,

That would depend on your configuration - if you're using it on your own DNS servers it would have to be handled server-side.

So I thought. As the reason for having a separate support site is that it'll be up if everything goes down, we wouldn't want the dns for the support to be with everyting else... So, probably a different domain name would still be best?

    mpaert,

If you have your DNS servers in alternate locations on alternate networks - the possibility of 'everything going down' is closer to impossible: Thus there's really no need for different domains as it's already on a different server, just more thought put into the DNS setup itself.

David, I see your point, and I wish that our setup would be like this, but it isn't. We use modernbill for account creation, would it still work with auto-account-creation if dns are located elsewhere? I found a great domain name now... mmmmmm (shouldn't get excited, i know, but it's a good one)

    mpaert,

I'm not entirely sure how modernbill works - It would be silly for the MB developers to set it up without remote support though so I would assume it works via a database of sorts: So let's pretend the answer is yes.
