competetor has not purchased .net (only .com)

Is purchasing your competetors url in .net legal? I have not made a personal decision on if its ethical to buy it and use it to refer to another site.

Your opinions and legal and ethical advice are most welcome. I understand you may not be a lawyer.

    Thanks,

It is not ethically correct to register any domain which uses other's company name or their domains, even if other extensions are not used like .net .org or incoming extensions. You might face the judges if your competitor's have the resources. I would suggest you to stay away from the idea and compete more etically even if the law allows you to do the potential strategy that you are planning.

Unless it is a big company you are probably going to get away with it, but that doesn't mean that it is right.

I agree. It was just nice to hear that I am not overly conservative.

Always ask yourself this question whenever you're going to register a domain and
    someone else has its variation:

"Why am I getting this name?"

I would feel legal questions aside, that doing this is not ethical. It would hurt your image rather than give you more business.

Is your competitors name trademarked? You may be walking into a legal situation if you try to secure it

It is a straight forward thing . Consider an example, u establish a shop or show room of something in a plaza or market . But there is already a fully established shop there .is this ilegal or would u call it a crime to distract customers of others ......
In actual it is not so . you are just establishing ur own bussiness ......
Same is the case for domain . you have help.com and i have help.net . Its perfectly ok ....

I'm not exactly sure of the legalities. I have no doubt that it would be trademark infringement if I used guywhosellsthesamekindofthing.net to exploit the reputation of my competitor guywhosellsthesamekindofthing.com for my selling the same kind of thing.
I don't know if it would be illegal to register guywhosellsthesamekindofthing.net, not use the domain, and leave it to guywhosellsthesamekindofthing.com to meet my price if he happens to also want guywhosellsthesamekindofthing.net.

Editing out redundant post, since I don't find remove option.

Not the same sort of deal. Now if you were to name the store the same name, but mabye add an extra word or letter on the end, then it'd be a whole diffrent story.

To the topic. I think it's unethical to do so, also, it looks bad on you, and looks better for them.
