Take a look at this link:

Yes, I believe you have it right. You have to either get other established webmasters to add links to your site, or purchase links from them.

Basically, it's the best when you exchange links with some complementary sites It's link exchange. You can also buy links from the sites you believe will boost up your sites rank. As for directories, which list some resources with no reciprocal link back to the site with the directory, well, it might be a paid directory. And don't forget that the primary aim of the directory is to provide the customers of the site with the comprehensive list of helpful resources and not just being a place for links exchange though sometimes I myself hardly believe this.

quite simply, ill link to your site if you link to my site. Its best to link and get links from websites that are related to yours. So if you have for example a website about bikes, ud want other similar sites to link to you, for example a bike clothing website etc.

The more relevant and better quality sites linking to you the better!!!

On a different note it was recently rumoured that backlinks will no longer effect your google PR or ranking in the google search engines.

This page:

http://www.acorndomains.co.uk/backlinks/

will let you check for back links on a domain name.

Try it and it may help you understand what backlinks are and see if any of your sites have them.

if your prepared to put a lot of time into it and build up a lot of links then yes it is worth it, however there comes the point where you have to think... is the effort of doing this making a worth while improvement. Obviously the results you get depend on the quality of link you link to and the quality of link that links to you... as i rule of thumb i dont accept links from other sites unless they have a google PR of at least 3!!!
