What do you think about this?

Hello

We have 4 servers with an European company.

Today, 2 servers failed. We conctacted them for hours, then, we have got this message:

hello,

we have checked your server at the console. the filesystem and hardware is
ok, it seems you have changed something at the system. the filesystem can`t
found. there cames kernel-panic. we can fix the problem 59$ per 15 minutes
or make free reinstall from the box. please let us know what we should do.

thanks

We didn't anything on these boxes and now we are taken as hostages: to pay $59 per 15min increments, or they suggest to delete everything and install the OS from scratch!

Bring up the logs and give them prove that you did not do anything to the filesystem.

If it's not working, I don't think it matters if you did anything to the filesystem or not. I hope you have backups.

ask them if they could boot to a "rescue" disk for you and then you could fix it yourself?

$59 per 15 minutes is insanity. If you don't have backups or proof it wasn't your fault, I'd suggest doing what Steven said.

These things happen. Their hourly rate is a little high, but I suppose thats the cost of doing business in those countries. I'm not going to discount your story, but what more can they do if they're looking at a panic on their end? They're certainly not going to want to lose that kind of money on your account.
