Question

Insane offer from lypha.com

Hi,

Please check the latest offer from Lypha:

http://www.lypha.com/hosting_plans.shtml

They offer 20GB HDD space and 350 GB bandwidth transfer for 6.95USD/month (if you buy for 2 years).

What do you think of this ? It smells like massive overselling . . .
I host a website with them so I am worried about this. Is it economically feasible to offer such a package for 6.95 USD / month ??!?

Regards,
Razvan

Well.... in the poll I recently started, it seems at the moment like most think even 20GB/month (at $10/month) is irresponsible overselling....! So what would then 350GB/month be...?

I'd say that was massive overselling, they wouldn't need many people at all to start using a lot of their allocated resources before they start hitting problems. If you are with them already stick with it and if you notice ther service degrade think about moving.

Question

I just sent them the below e-mail. Let’s wait and see if there are any logical explanations for this.

Hello,

Currently I host a domain with you – www.mihaiu.name.
I am very worried by your latest selling plans:

http://www.lypha.com/hosting_plans.shtml

For 6.95USD/month (2 year plan) you offer 20GB HDD space and 350GB bandwidth. This is *insane* overselling ! You cannot support these features on a long term basis ! Are you planning to go out of business soon ?!

Everybody knows that marketing is important but exaggerations are not welcome. You may attract new customers with these plans but you risk loosing all experienced web masters.

If I am wrong please accept my apologies. In any case, please explain how you can offer such features for such a low budget.

A new thread with this subject was open on webhostingtalk:

http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=463108

If you have good arguments it is best to make them public.

Regards,
Razvan

I just recommended them to a friend. I will tell him to hold down until this matter is cleared.

If I would find their website today for the first time I would not buy from them. IMO it is just poor marketing to post such figures. Any experienced web master will think twice before buying.

Razvan

You only need a few people to go nuts on the bandwidth, and any connecction (even 100mbps) will get clogged up. There is nothing wrong with overselling a bit, but to offer 20/350 for that price will force them to sell far more plans onto one server than you would want to. Follow adamneal's advise and MOVE AWAY FROM LYPHA if you experience slow loading times or excess CPU loads.

Their servers are located at The Planet, which seems to offer 1200 or 1500 GB of bandwidth on their servers. Draw your own conclusions.

I don't think you can burn that much bandwidth up without breaking there policy.

Thats nothing! GoDaddy offers 1,000GB of bandwidth per month for only $19/per month, now beat that! It's even cheaper if you go in a contract for 2 years, it comes to $15/per month

Just imagine if we all took out this $15 deal, and, after studying their TOS worked out a way to use 1TB per month, say, a thousand customers. They'd totally poo into their pants!
