    how do you read exim_mainlog?

    Hi,

    How do you read this logfile?

    As an example, I see this:

    2005-11-18 02:43:26 1EcwDl-0003K8-1A => dave <[email protected]> R=vir
    tual_sa_user T=virtual_sa_userdelivery
    2005-11-18 02:43:26 1EcwDl-0003K8-1A Completed

    xxxx was the domain.

    Yet in the webmail for that account, that email is not there. That user has no mail at all between 10pm and 7am, which is unusual apparently.

    But if there was anywhere i can read up on how to read this file in the general case, or any hints/tips of anywhere else to look that'd be much appreciated!

    Rgds,
    Dan

    you may read log files using tail, cat, less, more command. but, if you want read some message, they need leave in message queue or user malbox. But, first this is not ethic, and second - according local law this might be illegal.

    1EcwDl-0003K8-1A is id of the this message.
    grep 1EcwDl-0003K8-1A /var/log/exim_mainlog
    that will give you more information about that message

    => means that this is sent to the following account
    <= would mean that is received from following account

    if this is cpanel

    The message should be in
    /home/username/mail/xxxx.co.uk/dave/inbox
    where username is the name of the user who owns xxxx.co.uk/

    sorry i wasnt exactly clear - I know all about tail / cat / grep etc, what i meant was how do i understand the content. i.e. what is this users_sadelivery stuff?

    Basically i want to see if i can prove from that log that the mail was delivered, and if so, can I also tell exactly when it was downloaded and removed from the inbox?

    If I can't tell that now, can I increase the logging level?

    Since it read ( 2005-11-18 02:43:26 1EcwDl-0003K8-1A Completed )

    This means it got delivered

    for extra logging add this line in your exim.conf :

    log_selector = +address_rewrite +all_parents +arguments +connection_reject +delay_delivery +delivery_size +dnslist_defer +incoming_interface +incoming_port +lost_incoming_connection +queue_run +received_sender +received_recipients +retry_defer +sender_on_delivery +size_reject +skip_delivery +smtp_confirmation +smtp_connection +smtp_protocol_error +smtp_syntax_error +subject +tls_cipher +tls_peerdn
