    * Ants eat away woman's eye in hospital

KOLKATA, India (Reuters) - A woman receiving treatment for diabetes at a state-run hospital in eastern India lost one of her eyes after ants nibbled away at it, officials said on Tuesday.

The patient recovering from a post-surgery infection shrieked for help as the ants attacked her on Sunday night, but nurses told her it was normal to feel pain from the infection.

On Monday, the patient's family saw a gaping hole with swarming ants in it when they lifted the bandage on her left eye.

That's pretty disgusting. Imagine knowing that something was eating away at you but not being able to do anything about it. Whether or not she knew that ants were eating her, I don't know, but she probably knew something was wrong -- and that it was excruciatingly painful.

Yeah with that many people crazy things are bound to happen, but I still can't believe they just let her suffer through that.

At least they were ants, not maggots, or centipedes. Nonetheless, that is unfortunate.

Nah, the real reason is because you can't sue for a fortune like you can do in America.

Anyways, this is so so so sick. Yuck. I havent' taken my breakfast but I don't feel hungry anymore...

Hard to believe. The woman must have felt the movement of the ants, and complained something wasn't right.

In India and many other country's outside of the western world, if a patient and their family do not have the money to pay "tips" to the staff then they do not get decent or even humane care. You will see this happen in any country where corruption is rampant and staff is not paid well. I have read about hospital staff taking new born babies from their mothers because they did not tip the staff. Its absolutely pathetic.

She did complain. The nurses said pain and discomfort was part of the healing process.

The thing I want to know is why is there a bandage on her eye when she's supposedly being treated for diabetes.
