    * Malformed link redirects to arbitrary site (microsoft) ?

Ok geeks and net gods, I've got a question for ya. I was browsing in the fatwallet.com forums today, found an item that looked interesting (and saving a few bucks in the meantime). The poster had a malformed link

    https://http://www.petco.com/Shop/Pr...205&cm_ite=fss

    Notice, it starts with https://http://

Obviously wrong, but if you click through, it redirects to a Microsoft site at http://www.microsoft.com/

Now, I run linux on my desktop - nothing to do with MS (thankfully), so I know thats not the reason (home page is my site URL in my browser). Why does this arbitrarily redirect to Microsoft? Is it the same for everyone? Does microsoft now "own" http and https? (God, say it isn't so) ... I'm just perplexed, and was hoping you could help.

    Thanks

    Joe

PS: Obviously I knew how to fix the link - I'm just curious on the redirection part of it.

The second http is missing its ":". Try this URL on for size:

    http://www.petco.com/Shop/ProductLis...205&cm_ite=fss
If you have to operate your company behind the scenes or under a fake name, maybe it's time to leave the industry and start something fresh.

Ah.... ok. So because they're keyword heavy for http they get to the top of Google and therefore are the link you're redirected to? That is so um, SCARY?!

    Thanks

    Hmm... No MS redirect here.

First one is "Page cannot be displayed" and the others send me to petco. hrug:

Depends on the browser you're using. In my case with Firefox, I just noticed that it hits www.google.com with the first URL, then Microsoft.com. Thanks Westcan for pointing that out.
