Any Scottsmen abroad here? Question about Kilts :)

Hey all,

Question about kilts here....

My grandfather is from Glasgow, and one year, he gave me a gag gift of sorts for my birthday. I opened up the box, and there was........nothing in it . It's become a sort of a running joke that he was in such a hurry, he wrapped up the wrong box..

I thought I would do a similair joke on him, but with a special meaning. Seems when he came over to the states, he had to leave a few things behind, like his kilt. I thought it would be rather humorous to see the look on his face when he opened one, but I hear that they can be rather expensive.

Does anyone know the average price of a kilt these days, and do they vary in quality depending on the price?

Thanks!
Neil

I know around here a good quality kilt ranges from $400-$1000.

Four hundred would be a bargain. These things are very complex and require a lot of intricate work to make.

My friend has a sort of 'roll your own kilt' he does for the Renaissance festivals.

All it is, honestly, is something like 10 feet of fabric (not sure how wide), with a pin or something that holds it together.

I guess it all depends on the kilt, or you could say he's not wearing a kilt, but a length of fabric.

Find out what Clan he belongs to first. Rest assured, if he's on the McGregors side (as I am) you *really* don't want him to open up the box and see the Anderson's colors in there.

http://www.scotclans.com/history/1671_robroy.html

Oddly the clan badge for the McGregor's still translates as 'Royal Is My Race' with a Lion's Head - given the history of the Clan.... I have a stirling silver hat badge of it within 10 feet.

Oh they did a movie about that guy: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114287/
Not really accurate, but a good movie, in my opinion.

There's a lot of 'protocol' when it comes to kilts and a lot of respect needs to be shown when you 'pick a color'. I hear a lot of places now produce *fake* colors for people who aren't really 'allowed' to wear the real colors.

I'd say go safe (fake), or ask a few questions regarding his 'Clan' first.

Hmm, just thinking...is there an online database that can tell you your clan name by your last name? Their last name is Gatens if that helps any..

i talked to my grandmother and she dosn't want me spending that much money on something he might where on St.Patricks day, or holidays. So we've come up with a different solution.

take a picture of him next sunday, somehow find a picture of his clan kilt and digitally alter it so he's wearing it in the picture. Put the picture in the box, and wrap it up with a quotation saying, "I owe you" ...

Unless there's a cheaper gift from Scottland we can give him. Anyone have any ideas? He has just about eveything else

thanks!

heh, am i going to find a rather gross looking image of the real thing if I go to that link?

I was browsing the other link above, and found another gift that's a bit cheaper than a kilt..the clan crest plaque. But we sill need to know the clan name first to get one, ..
