Windows trouble: Double clicking on a folder opens search pane, not the folder!

    Hi there,

For some unknown reason my laptop's windows explorer has started acting oddly. I expect I've managed to turn on some option somewhere or other, but I havent a clue where.

what is happening is that when I double click on a folder in windows somewhere all that happens is a new window opens with the Search tool selected. The folder itself isnt opened.

Can someone tell me how to get be left mouse button back again please?

    Thanks.

Go to Start>> Run. Type in: regedit

    Find the following key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell

Single click on "Shell" to empty its contents into the right pane. Double click on the word "default". Change the Value data to "none" (without the quotes).

thanks for that. I'll give it a go in a bit.

Any idea why this has happened? It's a new laptop which I've had a couple of weeks, and I havent really done anything by way of changing settings here or there. All of a sudden it just started going to the search pane one day. Weird.
