Newbie looking for perfect server management co.

I've been a reseller for a long time and recently upgraded to my own dedicated. It's been a bit of a learning curve.

I was using a management company (won't name 'em here) that I haven't been too happy with. I'm now looking for a new server management company and was hoping you guys might be able to help. I can pay up to $100 per month.

What I need (beyond the usual stuff like server monitoring, system admin work):

    * Willingness to install software such as billing software, plone, etc. as part of admin work. Preferably unlimited admin hours.

    * Security audits upon request. Also server hardening.

    * Quick responses. But not just "I'll take care of it later" and then it turns into 2-3 days later. Would like solutions the same day, preferably within hours.

    * One of the most important things I would like to find is someone that will explain things to me. I want to learn. When I ask "How did you do that?" I'd like an explanation of how it was done so I can do it next time myself or at least learn something new.

I guess this may be a lot to ask.

Is there anyone out there that fits this?

    Thanks,
    LAIG

If you're going to go through the time to type "I was using a management company (won't name 'em here) that I haven't been too happy with. " why would you even bother type that sentence?

Wouldn't it be better to tell them who, and the problem, so you can give the reader a choice to make their own decision off of, incase they search this thread? Or even to prevent one of us from recommending you to that particular Management company, and completely waste our time in typing that companies name?

Anyhow. I'd recommend PlatinumServerManagement.com if that isn't the company referenced above.

Cheetweb is a server management company based out of Houston, TX. I'm not sure how big they are, but I have had good experiences with them with some stuff that I have done in the past. I believe they support cPanel, Ensim, and Plesk (all Linux) for $100/month per server.

Let's be realistic and stop trying to sell the kid something. *HONESTLY* you aren't going to find any server management company who is going to take the time to stop and explain exactly what they're doing for you. There's plenty of manuals out there if you want to do it yourself. As far as your other expectations, those are completely reasonable, and shouldn't be too difficult to find.

Go with platinum management services. I am a newbie too, and even though they didn't have to, they took the time to hold my hand and walk me through just about every concern I had.

wow, this one requirement is too much.... you know, it may take them to do it in 10 minutes but 1 hour to explain to you well (your questions may follow). One may wonder why schools are so expensive. You payment for the service just cannot cover the tuition, my friend.

Agreed. Just be happy the job gets done. If you knew how to do what they're doing, they wouldn't be in the business of getting paid to do it for you.

You would have to pay several times more than your actual budget just for this.

I would suggest got-management.com I've been using them for a year and John (the owner), is a real nice guy. He really knows his stuff and actually does take the time to explain things to you if you do not understand how they work. He is also very good with Modernbill, in case you need someone for billing. There will be additional charges however, if you want them to install something, as with any other company.

    They charge $75/mo per box.

Those above two are in conflict with each other. You can find someone to explain things to you but you will not find someone with 'unlimited' Admin hrs. Remember, no such thing as 'unlimited' in the Hosting World.

I agree that the best way to learn is to have someone pass on their experience & knowledge -- which hopefully will be good. The bad news is that you would probably be a paying an hourly fee and it could get costly. The good news is that you can learn a lot faster.

Keep up the hunt and I'm sure you will eventually find a Company or person you can work with. Don't keep looking or waiting forever though. If your Server has not yet been hardened then you run the risk of a Security breach. Best to get some important stuff done now and keep looking in the meantime.

    As many said, challenges is:
    1. Your budget for what you want
    2. Unlimited admin hours - Unlimited i never unlimited. Just a matter of when you hit the breaking point.
    3. Demand for immediate action - Not all issues are of the same urgency. Someone asking us to install a script for example is not going to be of the same urgency as a down server.
    4. Explaining - This is a touch and go thing. You may get it or not depending on how much spoonfeeding you are expecting. Example if someone tells you that you need to edit a config file, you go into what program you need to use, and then how you use SSH etc. then you may have an issue. Otherwise, it shouldn't be an issue.

    Thanks everyone, for your comments.

PlatinumServersManagement is definitely not what I'm looking for.

So far, Serverwizards appears to be my best bet though am also considering hiring someone individually.

If you're a talented system admin and like to explain how things work, please send me a private message with your rates.

    Thanks!

I was going to recommend Platinum Server Management as well. I have a couple servers with them, and a couple of my clients are signed up with them too.

PSM has taken care of random software installs for us, put in reboots when we had our hands full of #### with other servers, and the staff has without fail taken the time to explain things to me when I asked them "how'd ya do that?!"

Hey, nobody knows everything. There is no book, not really, not one that makes sense to some of us anyway. I know exactly what you're talking about LAIG, because I learned the exact same way, but I was lucky enough to have geeks for friends.

I've been really happy w/ PSM, but I've been a pretty good deal for them, I take up very little of their time so the margin is good on me. Seem to go in spurts... one month I'll put in a pile of tickets, then they won't hear from me for 6 months. They do a nice job of keeping an eye on things and covering things when we need an extra hand, though -

    Server Management

To add to this thread, we now have been with PlatinumServerManagement for over 14months and I cant express enough how satisfied we are with the level of support we have been getting from the team. They are a great team of highly experianced specialists, and very responsive to any support request ticket. We just migrated to a new server , and the level of support in configuring the new server, and migrating the accounts over to it has utta most impressed me. Platinumservermanagement has taken care of random software installs for us, put in reboots on our behalf , and the staff has without fail taken the time to explain things to us. The servers have been functioning without to many glitchs, and I thank PSM for that support when needed.
If I had to rate platinumservermanagement on a scale out of 10 it would definetly be 10+++.
Platinum Server Management team....KEEP UP THE FANTASTIC WORK.
    Cheers

I'm a bit puzzled why you are plugging in Platinum Servers after I clearly said that this company was not what I was looking for.

I am also looking to outsource server management and Platinum Server Management definetely would be an option for my Linux servers.
But anyone know of a server management company providing same services for Windows?

    thx.

Platinum Servers is not what I'm looking for as I said in my original message. I'm glad some of you have had good results with them. I have a friend that has not been happy with them. I didn't mention this originally in my first message because I saw no need to diss them here. My friend explained that they took over a week to do a software install he requested and then when he followed up they told him they do not do software installs and might do it "if they have time". So software installs are a courtesy and "if they have time". It's not something you can depend on them to do. They never did do the install and he eventually cancelled his account with them.

They were also unwilling to explain to how they did things when he asked (which was not often) and they explained that was not part of their management services. He says if you got something explained to you by them, lucky you.

They also do not do proactive security updates. From what I understand, you have to resquest them. As a newbie, I need a system admin that's more proactive. I don't have a clue about what's just been released and needs to be updated. He also said they were at least two responses he received from Platinum that weren't correct (support stuff). But whatever.

Of course, for $29/mo. you can't expect everything. And from what I've heard, they are not the right company for me. I'm looking for a company that does more and I am willing to pay more for it.

Thanks again for all your comments.

I've been very happy with www.got-management.com as I have said before. The help is always there and its a very 'personal' experience. Which really helps.

    I have used and recommend:

    Platinum Server Management
    - very low cost. Will install additional scripts without additional charges.
    - Reasonable initial response, but resolution sometimes takes longer. They do put priority on server that is totally down.

    AcuNett
    - Fast response and does great work.
    - Provides information on what they did, but don't expect tutorial.
    - Great personal service.

    CheetaWeb
    - I have only used for specific jobs. They were always quick and responsive.
    - Does a great job.

It doesn't matter if they charge $200 per month or $10 per month. What you should expect is for the company to fulfill their obligation that is stated on their website. If they want to charge $29/mo thats their problem. As a customer you have a right to get everything they say they will offer for that price..

We used PSM for about 9 months and just cancelled because lately the service has been terrible. We requested a migration of our websites from one server to another which took 7 days and still have only 1/4 of the sites moved.. I don't have time to do it myself which is why we hired these guys in the first place but in hindsight I would have done it myself and saved the headache.

    My lesson was learned..
