Red face P4 3.0HT vs AMD Opteron 2x242 - how much faster?

    Hi all,

P4 3.0HT vs AMD Opteron 2x242 - how much faster?

Looking over the server information at WHM on both CPU, i found there's not much difference in the speed. Both have 1024 KB cache size. Correct me if i am wrong.

So, how much faster is AMD Opteron 2x242 over P4 3.0 HT server?
    just alittle?

you cannot compare an AMD Opteron 242 against a P4 3.0, their is a 'major' difference in performance. You need to compare it against the likes of Dual Xeon 3.2GHz or higher.

It also depends on what your using it for. Intels are good at some type of jobs, amd's are good at others.

www.tomshardware.com is a good place to look for cpu performance comparisions

The AMD Opteron 242 will make the P4 look like a 500MHz Celery.

The P4 just doesn't compare, they are in completely different leagues.

Agreed, The Dual Opteron 242 is on par with the Dual Xeon 2.4-2.8 offerings.

How would you ever think that a single CPU machine could compete with a Dual?

    1 CPU vs 2 CPU's... It's kinda self explanatory I would think..

Silly Rich, hyperthreading is as good as 2 CPUs! Intel told me so!

Not the greatest benchmark in the world, but I had an AMD XP3200 which with Distributed.net RC5-72 did about 7.8m keys/sec, I now have a Dual Opteron 842, which does about 14.2m keys/sec. I'd say a P4 was a little slower day to day than an XP3200 (We've got P4s and XP3200s running for customers). As I say, not the greatest benchmark by some way, but it gives you an idea.

shouldn't this be based on what type of hosting you plan to do or what type of job you want this server to do...

    yet another useless cpu debate...
