I am still in the process of finding a proper way of setting it up for vhosts - there are many different howtos, none of the ones I found were completely adequate and clear. One says one thing, the other says other. Basically all of them saying the same thing, in a different way and different ways of setting it up.

However, I have heard some great reviews and comments on it's speed from some people.

While we're at it, does anyone know of a good, clear and complete howto?

spped and performance is great
if you run it with suexec you can control php process for each user
if you looking for god how to I can help you
I use this fastcgi.coremail.cn/index.htm module for apache2 on testing machine
Eeach Vhost with suexec enabled has php wrapper script inside

#!/bin/sh
PHPRC="/etc/php.ini"
export PHPRC
PHP_FCGI_CHILDREN=1
export PHP_FCGI_CHILDREN
exec /usr/local/bin/php -c ./

Above script should have user rights so I wonder if it is secure.
How to limit configuration options for php fg safe mode etc?

Yes, PHP with FastCGI interface can deliver better performance than mod_php, and more secure in shared hosting environment when combined with suEXEC. One drawback though, PHP configuration overriden in .htaccess does not work anymore. :-)

Yes
After two days of researching I found nice solutions.
Apache2(MPM=worker!!!)+ mod_fcgid
works like a charm , fast and reliable.
I can use per user php.ini also
Now I working on adding mod_chroot
