Thank you for those recommendations Elix and Jamie.
Jame, Pathfinder has a Google PR of 0 and a huge message on the home page saying: "This site is currently being moved off network. Please hold on." which doesn't build much confidence.
United Hosting and Clook look good.
Any other American web hosts have servers in the UK for their British clients?

I have known the owner, Jon, for a number of years, Nadeem. I'll happily vouch for him and his services. I suspect the reason for the PR of zero, is because, IIRC, Jon target market is mainly outside of the Internet.

I've seen 2 post form you. Obviously you couldn't find Uk web host. I suggest you to search in UK hosting directories. It should be easier to find decent UK hosting there.
Regards
D.

Beside all those mentioned above, you may consider also nethosted.co.uk , razorblue.com , xcellweb.net , easyspace.com , dsvr.co.uk (although I can't remember any host that is more expensive than this one).

One of the issues seems to be telephone support with from a geographical number.
The hosting directories just give listings of hosts & each has to be searched for whether they offer this & with no real guidance on the quality of the host. I can't say I find the directories useful myself & assume this is why so many people look here to find a host & check them out.

Try searching on http://uk.tophosts.com/
Never base your judgment on PR. The PR will not get you the quality of service you deserve.

Thanks very much for that: some of the recommended ones look great. Are there any others please?
Noticed that you get a lot more bang for your buck with US hosts. While US hosts may provide 2Gb in their basic packages, for instance, UK hosts only provide 200Mb. Plus is cheaper to call US hosts than UK ones! Costs 1p a minute to call USA with some telephone companies, but all telephone companies charge about 9p a minute to call 0870 numbers which most UK webhosts use
Only reason we need UK servers is to appear in Google UK results (site has .com domain name).

AFAIK, your Google UK appearence shouldn't make any difference whether you are on UK servers or not. All my sites that are hosted on servers in the USA and Canada, are in Google UK.

google.co.uk with "pages in the uk" seleced which commonly is the default at client desktops, only shows sites with a .uk domain or an IP allocated to a UK host by RIPE
the reason you *seem* to get more bang-4-buck in the US is because the massive overselling at all levels - from transit companies down to website resellers is not so prevalent in the UK.
also, remember the WHT pricing model of 99p/lifetime for unlimited eveything isn't shared by the real-world :p
most of the hosts suggested in this thread are colo/dedicated server clients of clients of gyron, who run a decent network in the UK, so the "connection" is largely equal, leaving the choice based on service, fetaures and support - IMHO price is low down on the reasons to chose a host - mostly its down to they either supply what you need they dont.

Ah, so it does. I never use the "pages in the uk" function, so I wasn't aware it did that. My mistake.
