Okay, I've decided to do mail for a couple of my own domains. I have a question about that though. I guess I don't understand how multiple MX records work. I know I must be thinking this out wrong, so please correct me.
If my main mail server goes down for a few minutes and email is is sent to the secondary mail server (the other MX listing) during this time, how does that help? I won't be getting the mail anyway if it's sitting on a different server from my main one. How am I thinking this out wrong?
Ahh, that is what I was looking for. I understand all that about priority, I just didn't know that you could setup your mail server specifically as a backup server and have it automatically send the mail back to your main mail server.
I use Qmail w/ vpopmail for my main mail server currently. Anybody know of any good howtos or something to setup a backup mail server? Yes, I know I can google it, but some howtos are better than others, so hopefully someone can suggest a good/easy one.
What you'd do is set up the backup server so that it doesn't think your domain is a local domain. It will attempt to relay it to another MX (and ignore the MX record pointing to itself). If that server is down, it will queue it for some time and retry as you would expect.
