So many other questions that need to be asked / answered:

    * Do you know how to run / secure and administer Windows?
    * Do you know how to run / secure and administer Linux?
    * What type of server is this going to be? What's it going to be used for?

You didn't answer the first two questions.

I would consider getting a fully managed linux based solution.

The reason Windows hosting cost more is due to licensing of the software.

It will depend on a lot of things.

What database does your application use? How does your application work? Does it depend on PHP, ASP, or .NET?

I agree with riverpast, If you could post more detail about what your actually needing to do we could probably point you in the right direction and determine if you need linux or windows

my question is how are you going to get anything done if you do not know how to use windows or linux? I suggest setting up a test machine at home for a few months and play around with it to get the feel for things

To answer your question directly.. Windows and Linux both work well for hosting. Most people choose one or the other based on which they are more comfortable with. The better of the two would be the one you can admin better..

Seeing how you don't know how to run either I would suggest the same thing sirius mentioned. (Fully managed)

it really depends on what you are planning to host, and most definitely what you feel more comfortable with.
