    7.6 earthquake struck Pakistan

    http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/asiapc...tan/index.html
(CNN) -- A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Pakistan early Saturday, killing at least 19 people and injuring hundreds, officials said.

The temblor's epicenter was 60 miles (about 100 kilometers) north-northeast of Islamabad and more than six miles below the Earth's surface, according to the Web site of the U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center.

Fourteen people were confirmed dead in Pakistan, including a girl killed when her school was damaged in Rawalpindi, near Islamabad. Four others died in Manshera and nine in Pakistani-controlled Kashmir and the country's northern region.

Police in Indian-controlled Kashmir reported five deaths -- three in the town of Baramulla and two in Srinagar. Also, about 150 people have gone to Srinagar hospitals with a combination of physical injuries and shock, police said. Nearly 200 houses in the region have been damaged by the quake.

I live in Islamabad , and well it was horrible earthquake , I was sleeping while it happened and it woke me up instantly , First time I have seen such a strong earthquake , it lasted for more than 3 minutes , on the tv they are saying it lasted six minutes .

When I was trying to go out of the house through the stairs the earth was moving so much it was difficult to walk , it was moving left and right i could visually see it moving , I have never been in such an earth quake before

Two blocks of a 12 story apartment have falled here in Islamabad , and some casualities in other areas of Pakistan too.

Currently they are saying 65 confirmed death on the TV .

I am ok , Since the main 7.6 earthquake there have been around 6 earthquakes , which according to the news is that they are the after shocks and ranged between 5 to 6 on the richter scale , and will keep happening for the next 48 hours .

The first earthquake was massive , 7.6 is alot , I thanks Allah that there wasnt too much destruction .

Above 7 Usually cause alot of destruction but this time even though it lasted around 6 minutes didnt cause too much destruction.

115 people died in India , 54 people died in Pakistan and 1 died in Afghanistan.

They are saying the death toll could reach 'thousands' becouse there are still people trapped.

It lasted 6 minutes?? I was in the Loma Prieta quake on October 17, 1989 in Northern California. It was a little over 7 on the Richter Scale but it lasted a little less than a minute. It seemed like it lasted forever though.

From what i understand, the disputed region of Kashmir has taken the brunt of the damange caused by the earthquake. With remote mountainous settlements proving to be the biggest long term problem.

One story that will grab the attention of many is of a school that has collapsed in the northwest of Pakistan, they've pulled 200+ bodies of schoolgirls out of the rubble and there are still some trapped.

Emergency teams have been sent from Britain to Afghanistan and Pakistan, i don't know when they will arrive exactly but they are bringing specialist equipment and it can hopefully be put to good use. They say that in some cases, the search and resuce teams in Pakistan can hear people who remain alive but lack the means to reach them without potentially causing further damage.

I rmember than after the Ban earthquake, one survivor was found alive more than a week after the initial quake. There is hope yet for those still trapped.

    Update -

A statement made by a Pakistani Military official has revised the death toll drastically upwards, it is now believed to be in the region 18,000.

With the remote and urban areas located between Pakistani controlled Kashmir and Islamabad proving to be those worst hit by the 7.6 quake.

The time of the day that the earthquake occurred is reckoned to be one of the main reasons as to why the eath toll is so high.

A 58 strong team sent from Britain shoudl arrive in the next few hours. It consists of 50 emergency [Medical and Search and Rescue] personnel and their equipment, and 8 diplomatic staff to assist Consular and High Commission staff already in the country with their efforts in resposen to the disaster.

Unhappy Up to 18,000 PLUS people DEAD in PAKISTAN alone! - Death toll to RISE 3 times!!

The strongest earthquake to hit the region in 100 years!

    Videos

    http://geo.tv/important_events/earth...index_pic.html

The death toll in Pakistan from the earthquake has climbed to more than 18,000, a spokesman for Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf announced. CNN has not confirmed that figure. Pakistan is bearing the brunt of the 7.6 quake, which was centered 60 miles north-northeast of Islamabad. India, the disputed territory of Kashmir, and Afghanistan also suffered. Aftershocks continue to rattle the south Asian region.

This is just horrible news. I wonder if it's a violent release of energy related to the major tsunami last year.

My sympathy to the families of victims.

Man, what a horrible loss of life. It just seems that lately the natural disasters are getting worse and worse. First the tsunami, then hurricane katrina and rita, and now this. They are also predicting that there is going to be a huge earthquake in LA not too far off. God bless everyone over there. As I am sure, the US will send any assistance that is needed.

It's shocking and heart-breaking news for all of us. President Musharraf has said that we have enough man-power to find and cure the dead and injured, but need financial support.
UN, UK, US, Turkey and Japan has already sent their medical teams are relief to Pakistan.

I keep praying for the victims and for all of us, the remaining.

The US has offered 100K in aid I seriously would have thought bush would have offered lot more than that specialy considering what Pakistan has done for the US in the last few years anyway something is better than nothing. China has already sent I believe more than 6 million in aid to Pakistan so least someone is helping out along with the british team which has arrived in Pakistan I believe to help with rescue operations.

My brother in law I think has lost few relatives as no one has been able to reach them as they are in Kashmir where most of the 18,000 have died. I just hope it doesn't get any worse for his family as some of them have already lost their homes.

I have gone and sent some money to my brother in law who is a doctor he along with few of his friends have gone to kashmir to help out the people there as those areas are the worst hit and it will the hardest to get any aid there...

I just hope things calm down a little as there has been like 18 aftershocks most of them higher than 5 and some nearly 6.

My heart goes out to all those who are suffering and may Allah give them courage to go through these tough times.
