Modernbill want to charge me for what I allready paid for

I am so angry! My modernbill licence expired about a month or so ago. I had deleted my current version of MB off my hard drive. And after a few modifications to my Modernbill script, I did something wrong and needed the original file to fix the situation. I found out Modernbill had stopped me from downloading the latest version that I had paid for (Version 4.3.2:B-1R:Z:32)

So I asked that I could temporarily download the version that I had paid for so I could fix my modernbill installation.

Their reply:

"You will have to renew your support to receive access to the Download Center.

Please go to support.modernbill.com. Click on "License Center." Click on "Home." Click on "Renew Now." Please fill out the order form to renew your support."

Modernbill wants me to pay 30$ for software I had already paid for

No, they want you to pay $30.00 to renew your support subscription. It isn't there fault you failed to save the software during the available download time.

Most companies when you buy software online only give you a few hours to do it. Modernbill includes the support so you get 6 months, then you have to renew your support to download again.

So don't try to blame them, blame yourself for not bothering to save the original tar.gz file you downloaded.

The script originally does not cost $30, you paid for a license to use the script not for continuous downloads off their server.

Yep .. WN-Ali is correct.. They are asking the charges to renew your support subscription.

You should have saved the installation file somewhere when you got your license.

FULLAMHRD,

This is true of most frequently developed software applications. Vbulletin, Kayako, Modernbill, Cerberus etc. You must pay a bi-annual or annual support fee to continue to receive the latest software releases and support. This helps pay for on going development of the software. This is nothing new and certainly not out of the norm.

OK thanks for your help, I do software development and would never consider doing that to my customers. I guess its just my personal ethics (whether its good business is a different question). Regardless i managed to obtain a copy.

Cheers

I agree, I can't see any reason why they wouldn't be able to give you the version that you paid....... it's about playing fair.

Zaja-7 - It is about playing fair. If you lose your Windows XP CD does microsoft send you a new one free?

They don't and a download software company provides the client a specified amount of time to download and store to removable storage there software. In the case of ModernBill that is 6 months unless you renew your support, other companies it can be 3 months to a year. In fact the online software sales companies such as http://www.direct2drive.com/ tend to only give you a week at most.

The fault was not on ModernBill's part, it was on the OP's part for simply not making a backup of the software.

Larry, I didn't say it was ModernBill's fault, I understand and accept restrictions on downloading some software, but they are small company.....definitely not giant like Microsoft, and FULLAMHRD is ModernBill Customer.
He didn't ask for the latest software releases or support.

From Direct2Drive FAQ:
My hard drive crashed, where can I get the game download again?

Any game you have purchased will be listed under your "My Account" section. Here you can download the game again anytime you need to.

Actually I've purchased from direct2drive. If you don't purchase something monthly your account gets disabled meaning you can't login. It may be listed, but if you can't login...............

ModernBill isn't as small as you would think either. They are actually growing quite a lot. But that is besides the point. They are simply enforicing there own policies as any business would do and using normal procedures.

Standard w/ MB,

When you go ahead and cancel your license, you will loose access to your support & downloads.

I undestand FULLAMHRD since the same way I was feeling after my support stop and it was a while before and when back to the support site. I think that MB should allow you to download the last ver. that you paid, If I go to kayako or VBulletin I could download the last time I paid for the yearly Subsc.

Just my two cents...
